There's a trade-off at the heart of the Mario Party series, at least when it comes to entertaining groups. Compared to something like Mario Kart 8[マリオカート8], Mario Party games move slowly: every player takes a turn, one at a time, and then you play a minigame together—then you repeat that sequence for, say, 15 rounds.
On the plus side, that lets all players talk to one another. You'll hear people coaching their friends, ribbing them, encouraging them, chatting about unrelated things. That's a really nice thing to have at a party.
On the other hand, the slow pace will leave some folks bored. My sister, for instance, is always gone by the time her turn comes around, having gotten restless and wandered off. We'll find her picking up her room or getting things ready for work the next day—any random thing. And play has to stop till she gets back.
Between the two games, Mario Party Superstars and Mario Kart 8 will help you entertain any group. I usually prefer the latter, but it definitely limits conversation since it sucks everyone in so effectively.
Specifically for Superstars, I would say the biggest pro is the insane number of minigames. You seldom end up repeating any—and a lot of them are very fun. The con is the bizarrely small number of playable characters and boards. But overall I would say it's a really nice party game and a fun way for two or more people to pass the time.

they had me in the first half with that other switch MP release but thank goodness they brought back the gameplay that made Mario Party worth playing in the first place. Nintendo knows what we want, and we want more Gamecube games and we want them online. The only downside now is that when I verbally and physically assault my friends I can't front like it's the game mechanics and board layout that gave me a rage handicap

It is good that Mario Party finally goes back to its roots, but you get WAY too many coins in this game. Everywhere are Lucky Spaces that give coins and free items. You can buy everything, losing coins is not a threat anymore and everything gets less exciting because of that.
