An SNES adaption of the magical girl manga/anime series of the same name, Magic Knight Rayearth is Pandora Box's short (by genre standards), idyllic and orthodox JRPG. Although downright predictable and verbose, its storytelling - if for nothing else, is a balance of two more or less related mediums, as anime tropes (e.g. ordinary students-turned-heroes in another world, lengthy 'awakening' moments in the midst of danger, villain of the week-style chapters) coexist with console RPG tropes (retrieval tasks, gauntlets, solo trials, etc.). There's the odd old-school dungeon design here and there, and there's the occasional jump in difficulty, but streamlining seems to be their top priority, helped out by a generous dose of heal/save points (sometimes multiples within the same dungeon) to facilitate power-leveling. 'Cozy' does not necessarily mean 'memorable', though. Therefore its appeal hinges on the characterization of each protagonist - which is rarely good news, and of course on one's nostalgia for the franchise.
