I had some fun with the Kirby Canvas Curse game for the DS and so figured I'd get some fun out of this one too. And for the most part I did! I think that some of the design choices in this game make for interesting levels and boss fights. Like being able to stop waterfalls and lasers by drawing lines blocking them, and directing not only Kirby but also projectiles using your drawings, It's quite an effective use of the WiiU's gamepad I must say! Then there's turning into a tank and a rocket ship, or using your drawn paths to dig around through the dirt. Some levels will have you use the gamepad as a map to plan out Kirby's path in large open areas. I kinda like how there were sometimes sections of the game world that were corrupted and would not allow for your rainbow paths to be drawn, allowing for some interesting momentum based puzzles. The game also sports a really eye catching claymation art style that looks awesome!
My complaints for this game would be that Kirby moves painfully slow most of the time making for some moments to feel frustrating (particularly during boss fights), it can also be a challenge just to turn Kirby around! I also thought it was weird that all of the game-play is focused on the low-res gamepad and I can't really enjoy the game's gorgeous graphics on my HD TV. The bosses were a little on the unimaginative side, especially since they get recycled for later areas. Also the game felt a little short too compared to previous Kirby adventures. And I hope you don't go into this game expecting a compelling narrative! It's like they had 20 minutes left after developing everything else to quickly come up with a story lol! But anyways,..... This game isn't too bad, like I say there's some really good puzzles and gamepad usage, the art style is great and the game certainly aims to be different from your typical platformer and I appreciated that! There's just not a heck of a lot of depth here unfortunately.
