I will start by saying that i dropped this one around the 12 hours mark, which is usually a very odd thing for me. Either i drop games off in the first 2, or i end up completing them even if im not having a great time. But Kingdoms of Amalur is the odd RPG that is competent on a surface level, but is so damn lenghty that its flaws get more and more noticeable the more hours you sink into it.
This game definitly feels like it came out of that era of "press A for Awesome". If offers a very simple and action focused combat system, similar to the action that God of War was offering at the time, except way more limited with the options you are given. Likewise, there are a lot of enemies in the game, but their AI is rather poor, and the ways you can interact with them are also quite limited,
On the story side of things, i found it rather generic fantasy, with shallow characters and extremely simplistic quest design. It really feels like you are playing a single player experience in an abandoned MMO, with NPCs having very little interactions, and quests being variations of fetch quests with very little choices. There is the ability to kill friendly NPCs, and the town will turn hostile on you, but there really is no incentive to do so as you lose more than you gain.
Visuals are decent for PS3 era, and the artists go a long way into making all the different areas and dungeons feel unique.
Overall i cant consider it better than a mediocre RPG. The forgotten gem was nowhere to be found from what i played.

It feels like I'm playing Dragon Age: Origins with God of War combat. I wonder if anyone else feels this way? This is one of my favorite games because of the simplicity in the combat system.
i agree, except it does the exact opposite to me. Its way too simple for how lenghty the game i. Feels like it was part of that era of "press A for amazing".
thinking about how Curt Schilling took $75 million from the Rhode Island government to fund 38 Games and was so bad at it that when they went bankrupt he was under investigation by the state police. and the whole thing is still being paid off by Rhode Islanders to this day.
Wow, I knew 38 Studios was a disaster but I didn't realize they had taken a loan from the state of Rhode Island. The more I read about Curt Schiling, the more he seems like a real piece of shit. At least we got a good Grant Kirkhope soundtrack out of the ordeal
