Square does it again and gives us another essential unnumbered sequel to this already convoluted series. This is essentially the Chain of Memories version of Kingdom Hearts 2 where it is a direct sequel that sets up the premise of the next game. This game isn't bad but it has a number of issues. The biggest glaring flaw is the story, the story is just a convoluted mess that tries to explain why the Organization members are back and brings in time travel. Kingdom Hearts really isn't a series that needed time travel but apparently now we get random time travel to explain plot holes. The other thing is the game takes place in dreams so none of the events really happen in this game outside of what Xanhort does, the Worlds you visit nothing matters, which is a shame because I actually enjoyed some of the new Worlds. Speaking of which that was the highlight of the game for me. I really enjoyed the Fantasia World where you fought enemies to the Nutcracker suite and the hell seeing Jeff Bridges character in Tron was pretty entertaining. The game sort of plays similar to Birth By Sleep and the gameplay for the most part is competent and fun, although some things seem to be added. I didn't really care for the rail grinding system which felt like it was just added to make the game more chaotic and fast paced. The other thing was the drop meter where you were timed and would switch between Sora and Riku. I get what they were trying to do but often times it got annoying where you were in the middle of a boss fight and you dropped out so when you came back you had to redo the fight. The game took away Donald and Goofy and instead you got Pokemon-like creatures for companions who had different abilities linked to them you could get. It felt kind of weird in a Kingdom Hearts game and almost a little out of place, although I will admit it wasn't horrible but there were many times you had to spend a lot of time just to get one crucial ability and the game isn't long enough to nearly get all these abilities.
The game itself isn't too long and can be beaten in 10-15 hours depending on how much you explore. There aren't a lot of secrets or unlockables so once you beat the game there isn't a lot to do like the other Kingdom Heart games. So overall this really is a mixed bag. It has decent gameplay, some cool new Worlds, and even some fun boss fights, but at the same time it has some really odd additions like the timed partner system and the lack of Disney companions, plus the story is just so convoluted and adds a stupid time travel story to bring back villains we already killed in previous games. So if you want a competent Kingdom Hearts game and don't care about the story this isn't bad, but otherwise it really doesn't add much to the franchise and really just acts as a way to bridge the stories of the 2nd and 3rd games together.

Kingdom Hearts' story has always been kinda bad but amongst some of its ridiculous stuff there were def some cool concepts. DDD completely shat on the few good things built by the franchise
What is an Dream Drop Distance, exactly?
Yours sincerely, with love,
