In the near future, the United States is faced with a terrorist threat from Kun Lan, who possesses the ability to turn people into mindless suicide-bombing creatures known as the Heaven Smiles. The Killer7, a group of assassins manifested from the personalities of their leader, Harman Smith, is called upon to deal with this threat.
despite existing in genres that exist, you will never experience anything like killer7.

I remember first time I played Killer7, it was such a breath of fresh air. I really liked control scheme - you use only 2 buttons to move, one button make character move forward, and second button turns him 180 degrees. Going through the doors/picking items is implemented by system of visual hints, example: You go forward till you see that way split into 2 separate ways. Your character automatically stops till you choose which way to go, by clicking one of options - like its a visual novel kinda game. I thought its a great idea, because it solves problem I had in many old adventure games - you go. Into some large room, and you need to find some small item - if you have no luck, exploration turns into annoying pixel perfect search for right item. In Killer7 you can't miss some item like that, because item is just one of few options, in discrete enumerated space of options (in comparison with continuous space of pixels in any other 3d adventure game). Puzzles in Killer7 are still pretty annoying but for another reason. They are not very logical, often you need to use very specific skill of character that was never mentioned before (for example you need to shit statue with special skill of one of characters, statue has symbol on it that its in some way related to this skill, but never mentioned before). Puzzles manage to be both primitive and obscure. Also they show worst flaw with Killer7 - its unfinished. Example of unfinished puzzle is in ulmeyda level. You need to find several figures to use them on some gate or something, but you only need to search for one figure, rest of figures are in the same room as the gate you need to open, you just need to push button on machine to get them. Its like developers had no time to hide figures in places so they hide in the same place, but then why such stupid puzzle is even left in the game? When it goes to fighting its similar to RE4 - drawing gun causes character to stay in place, but in killer7 you have FPP while shooting. Killing simple enemies is pretty cool, but some boss battles seems barely tested. For example, Asian guys with crushed brains: To kill them you need to shoot brains inside their skills (don't ask), but you can't go any closer to them, and you need to shot very small fragment of brain from far away - its difficult even using sniper rifle. Also sometimes you don't know if your attack even affect bosses in any way. Example is: Woman with anime girl mask. Fight is lengthy, its 5 minutes of straight shooting and without boss's health metter you don't know if your strategy works. So gameplay is mostly pretty mediocre, I finished it mostly because I wondered how game will end. Killer7 is really good with keeping your attention with narration and crazy story. There is some aura of conspiration and secret from past. Ending may be pretty dissapoing as it leaves you with more questions than answers, but this game just works like that - story is crazy, it never answers any question and you are left wondering what is going on. Even if its incoherent it at least keeps being intriguing. Also game has number of interesting themes, most interesting is theme of repetition. Number of times throughout the game you see same places, and you wonder what is behind them. Every time you are in your house you hear BDSM type screaming behind closed door - what is behind closed door? What is behind closed doors in colloseum that you go through in every chapter? What is relationship between Harman and Samantha - she is whore? Student? Servant? Answer to all those question you will got - or you wont, but at least there will be some hints! So in summary Killer7 is pretty good game, but its flawed and not as good as people thinks think it is. I also look for fun in video games, and there are many games with better and more funny gameplay than Killer7

Yeah, games like this make me kind of weary of the New Discourse surrounding the quality of specific cult games as a whole, .
the gameplay is not only boringly easy and simple, it’s handholding and repetitive to a fault; pretty sure i could define about five or six layers of developers making the game idiot-proof, which may very well be a post-modern commentary of the nature of gaming, but somehow leaves the game between being transgressive but not experimental enough — it’s just a half-hearted design that plays without flow or consequence.
also, steve blum voices his same act for like four characters in this??
I disagree with every take btw. even without the postmodern elements I find the core mechanic original and fun + the new Smiles every level add legit variety. the character dynamics are distinctive enough to keep it fresh (after multiple playthroughs it holds up). killer8 is objectively difficult as fuck, and it also owns to just go full run and gun with the new character
also the ending section was one of the of those true "holy shit" things for me, never have I wanted to play something again so fast in order to recontextualize the dialogue and cutscenes with it. its kinda like what I had with Mulholland Dr (although this is more Inland Empire in terms of plot coherence, in that its more about its themes (the geopolitical ones in this case which feel incredibly relevant still))
The Silver Case series killed this game for me. On a replay it felt tiresome and needlessly obtuse (25th Ward being super obtuse while still having a much better overall point and direction), if it weren't for the Travis infodumps this game would be 90% based in spirit but ultimately boring gameplay, 8% awesome cutscenes and 2% proper storytelling
I do know about the companion book, I fucking read it. It absolutely fills in gaps that the game completely left out. What questions does it create? You seemed to have left those out.
Oh and as for gaps it fills. It talks about who sits beside harman in the hotel (which the game completely leaves out). It fills in the background of Toru Fukushima and why your even killing him in the first place (which the game very lightly touches on), it explains the different versions of harman (which the game doesn't touch on at all), it goes over the backstory of harman and the smith syndicate (which the game barely touches on, only covering the hotel). I could really go on and on but I think I've covered the major stuff. The other gaps in writing are pretty minor and aren't that hard to piece together.
late response to your dumbass response but the companion book contradicts both killer7 and itself. also, you are still not considering that the game is incomplete due to cut content so yeah the companion book filling gaps makes sense
I truly find appeal in how incomprehensible it all is tbh. There's such a sense of mystery. If you consider it unfinished (like pretty much every other game in the top 10 - the 2nd half of DS anyone?) It's madly rewarding. At least for me. But Inland Empire is also one of my favourite films ever. Pretty much the definition of a proud cult classic.
I've even grown to enjoy the objectively shit puzzles just for fhr informant ficinf me the middle finger, and still explaining nothing. There is that truly incomprehensible one on the top floor with the posters and shit too tho
The story in this game is great and, at the same time, it's the least important thing about it. I'd say it's almost an exclusively visual and thematic experience accompanied by very fun gameplay.

kinda loses me near the end though by being a little too nebulous.

I need more stuff like this/mgs (especially 2)/southland tales that combines near future sci Fi and political intrigue and postmodernism
