Kao the Kangaroo was a worthy lower budget alternative to the historic 3D platformers of the late 90s. You control a feisty, tough, but also cute, Australian animal (gee does that sound familiar?) as you navigate through 30 mostly linear levels. The levels vary greatly in scenery, difficulty, and strategy. There are also some fun vehicle-based stages (snowboarding, hang gliding, speed boat, superpowered crocodile, etc) that spice things up, but unfortunately, these are pretty difficult and best taken slowly. This game is low on depth but the playful atmosphere and relatively long play time always kept me coming back as a kid.
However...the boss battles are underwhelming, and the controls are as clunky as most old 3D platformers. There are no continues after you lose all your lives, so in theory, you'd always have to start from level 1...however, if you simply restart the game (or restart your Dreamcast, or restart your emulator) after getting a game over, you'll simply go back to the last autosave! So effectively, you do have unlimited continues. Also, it's pretty difficult to figure out the enemy hit boxes, and most of their attacks have a range that is equal to yours. I still can't figure out how to routinely beat them without taking damage. Yes there are a lot of clunky things about this game.
All in all, though, Kao's undeniable kangaroo charm and the diversity of level types and atmospheres keep this a pretty fun game in my eyes. I wouldn't recommend this to contemporary gamers, but it's good for a hit of nostalgia, even if you didn't grow up with this particular game.
