Jumping Flash! 2 is Jumping Flash! but better, feeling more like an expansion pack than a full-fledged sequel. Mechanics-wise there's a new weapon and a new HUD element and that's about it. What's really been improved is the level design, which is now larger in scope and more challenging than its predecessor. Whereas the first two-thirds of JF! proper were easy to blitz through, the larger estate in the sequel allows for trickier jumps and better hiding areas for the Muumuus (who are now acting as the gate keys rather than than the cybercarrots of the first game), and its evident just by playing through the first stage. Similarly, boss fights have been beefed up compared to the original and they provide some of the most compelling parts in the game. So what else is there to say about JF!2? While I do miss the simple early-3D feeling of the original, the sequel makes up for it by having a better atmosphere overall, using well-tread themes like ice, lava, etc. to good use, while keeping a few aces up its sleeve. I liked the rainy, foggy ruins the best. The soundtrack - which was already pretty good - has been beefed up substantially, now even more upbeat and infectious.
The only real weakness of JF!2 is how easy it is to get lost in the levels, especially the later ones. A map would kill the exploration, but some kind of meter that at least tells you how high up in the stage you are would have been a nice touch to mitigate some of the moments where I jumped around slack-jawed looking for the highest point on the map to get that last goddamn Muumuu. It's slightly disappointing that JF!2 is largely more of the same as JF!, even with its improvements; I was kind of expecting some really cool creative twists in gameplay. As it stands, Jumping Flash! 2 is merely very good. If you're absolutely strapped for time, play this over the original, but for the best Jumping Flash experience I strongly recommend playing through the first game before you move on to the sequel as both games are only two-ish hours anyway.
