A Puzzle Quest-type game with steampunk mechas and a light touch of roguelike, why of course.
Basically a series of battles where you match coloured gems on a board to power up abilities, hitting the enemy and protecting yourself, and like Puzzle Quest it can get addictive enough, so easy to go for one battle more...
Meanwhile there is some randomization what missions and what abilities become available and one will die again and again but every campaign contributes to global progress, unlocking new abilities and giving permanent boosts making the next campaign hopefully easier (and it's not too easy, after 20 hours I managed for the first time to reach the final boss, but not beat it yet of course...)
It's fun and addictive enough, though one can remark that the game would benefit from more content. It does have some notable balance issues: some submechanisms are not particularly important or useful now, so any special abilities affecting them is a waste of space, some others might make interesting combos if one could ensure getting the proper type of augmentations early on but now are not worth it to pursue, while some other augmentations are practically necessary, and in any case a bout of bad luck screws one over... So while a good game, it is not a great game, but the problems are the type that I'd expect Ironcast II, should that ever be done, to be even better.
