A great hommage to the build engine era of FPS games, by some still hailed as the golden age of the genre. Im not so much in that camp, i feel like Duke Nukem 3d is great despite its engine, not because of it, and i felt like Samurai Warrior and Blood were just too damn hard and obtuse for me. Fortunatly i did enjoy Ion Fury more than those titles, it has a better adjusted difficulty curve and its not too reliant on hit scanning enemies.
It presents a loud mouth protagonist that has a certain charm to it, but can get hold after some time. The visuals and sound are incredible considering this is a build engine game, but once again there are some limitations that come with it that i would rather not have. Things like enemy AI being too static, hitscanning enemies being a general shit fest, the way that shadows obscure anything thats beyond a 20 meters range. There is also a reliance on the game to end stages with boss fights, and to this day, after over 30 years of trying, noone still has done proper FPS boss fights.
The level design is great, with lot of secrets to discover, a steady supply of enemy encounters and ammo, and some decent puzzles. Some of the puzzles i must say were a bit too obtuse for me, some of the key elements got lost in the background too easy and sometimes its hard to understand whats interactable and whats not. But that may just be my general lack of gametime on FPS from this era.
Overal a very solid FPS, that can compete with the quality of the games its emulating.

would be a bit higher if it weren't for some REALLY annoying enemy designs (those invisible fuckers and the spiders being everywhere) and the mid section bogging it down
solid though the writing is terrible. i know writing isn't on the top of the totem pole for a Build shooter but it's pretty egregious here. most Build games have really funny/witty protagonists, but Shelly has maybe a couple decent quips throughout the game. and the villain is just as badly written.
also one of the least interesting Build shooters stylistically, despite the very detailed environments. other issues like generic enemies with no personality, annoying enemies like the spiders, and some annoying sections in the middle and end (in addition to this game just being too long for what it is) made me enjoy this a lot less than any of the big three. solid foundation though, makes it fun to rush through every once in a while.
