Title
i have a very long and storied past with identity v - i used to be a b (almost a!) badge prospector. i have no idea where to start reviewing it, so i think i'll just touch on everything in a list:

  • the world idv is set in is really, really cool. the production design in this game is undeniably unique and sometimes even gorgeous. i'm a sucker for good production design, and if that sort of thing matters to you, you're in for a treat.

  • this, the lore, and the characters are most of what draws people including myself to idv. however, netease have delayed if not neglected on expanding it in-game despite promises in favor of focusing on skins and events. but that's something more endemic to mobile games in general than idv in particular.

  • idv is a lot more successful in east/southeast asian markets than it is in the rest of the world. there are dedicated mandarin, malay, japanese, etc. servers. for the rest of the world, there is the english-speaking "na/eu" server. it's still playable, but don't expect lightning-fast wait times.

  • the game's tutorial is not super detailed at the beginning, meaning that a lot of people go into idv without really knowing much of the game's rules. there's a lot of implicit rules/techniques/things you should do during a match if you want it to go well that you can only really figure out through experience and/or searching the web. this is confusing and discouraging for newbies, and frustrating for the veterans who are matched up with them.

  • idv is fun to play casually, but only if you know how to play/what you're doing. the multiplayer modes that open up for a few hours a few times a day range from alright to a bit boring.

  • despite this, the game really, really wants you to rank. it gives you bonus essences and other achievements if you rank. it also effects the gameplay - if you play only casual and get super good, you'll most likely be stuck playing against people who are also at the lowest rank, and most of them are stuck at where you were when you started. this can get annoying if you're planning to be casual-only in the long run.

  • if you want to rank, the meta is atrocious and hasn't changed much since the game's release, especially for survivors. for them, the same few characters (seer, mercenary, forward, mechanic, with a few alterations from time to time) and character types (rescues mainly) are still the go-to strategy against pretty much any hunter. for hunters, there's a bit more wiggle room, but you may have to abandon your main out of necessity as you get higher in rank as survivors get better and learn how to counter you. this all makes it considerably less possible to come up with creative ways to play unless you're already good and understand what you're doing, and even then you'll most likely have to compromise for the sake of securing a win/tie. even if you're dead set on becoming a thief main, you're probably gonna lose most of your matches unless you have a seer/mercenary/etc with you.

  • the ranking times are also set by the game, meaning you have to make room in your schedule for it if you wanna do it. if you're going for a character badge, you have to play every day or else your ranking will drop dramatically, especially if you're going for a frequently played character. if you just wanna increase your rank, "rank reset" at the end of each season sets your rank to a lower level so you have to play enough to make sure you like where you end up. this leads to the game feeling more like a chore than anything fun. again, not something unique to idv, but there's no real way to retain a history of your ranking.

  • also, the game doesn't have an effective in-game team communication feature for survivors beyond being able to pick from a few stock phrases. this means that survivor games with randos are liable to end in losses due to lack of communication/coordination. this isn't something with an easy solution, but for a game based in strategy, it greatly limits how you can play. you can always play with friends over voice chat, but it's not that easy for everyone to find someone to play with.

  • it's not great for any multiplayer game, but the english-speaking player base for idv isn't stellar. meanness/snarkiness if you don't pick the "right" character or if you mess up something in-game, under/overestimating fellow players if they have a character badge/high enough rannk, stuff like that. it's also attracted a passionate fandom so there's a lot of weirdness about ships dragged into regular gameplay. if you wanna play survivor, get people you like to play with you. if you wanna play hunter...good luck.

  • idv has no cosmetics/powerups/anything you can purchase to make the character you play as more "powerful", it's all you. on the other hand, it has an infamously stringent gacha system. unlike most mobile games, most s skins or special/event skins are never rereleased. some are voted back in through arbitrary contests, though it's usually always the same ones/the ones for popular characters that win. this means that used accounts with "desirable" skins can go for up to thousands of dollars on account reselling websites. many games market skins/limited time stuff with fomo, but idv does it quite literally.

  • tldr: super cool idea with intriguing universe/production design. can be fun if you know how to play, but suffers from some standard mobile game pitfalls. strength in characters and lore is unfortunately hardly-ever touched on in a significant way. unnecessarily sharp learning curve, horribly unbalanced, little room for creativity and flexibility in gameplay. if you rank, it takes so much time and effort that it feels like a chore. if idv interests you, i suggest playing casually/with friends, reading about the lore, checking out the stageplay, and/or looking at fanworks while staying on the sidelines.
