If The Residents were the original musical pranksters and anarchists, then Kanoguti is perhaps their closest video game analogy.
Japanese indie developer Kanoguti gained notoriety in recent years for their surreal, occasionally horrifying short games that looks like it came out straight from the mind of a madman. Their most famous work, I.R.P., is a series of short and randomly sequenced "games" (for lack of a better term) where you control anything from a pseudo-visual novel featuring poorly rendered sprites of a boy and a girl talking gibberish before the dialogue degenerates to nothing but DIEDIEDIEDIE, random psychedelic fractals, patterns and letters flying across the screen, nauseating horror vignettes to various RPG maker deconstructions that could make Toby Fox proud. The abrasive but strangely catchy MIDI soundtrack only enhances the fever dream experience, like WarioWare[メイド イン ワリオ] meets LSD. I believe this is Kanoguti's finest moment, thanks to employing his Kafkaesque wry humor and mind screw imagery to maximum effect. It may not be for everyone, but it has to be played to be believed.
