Hudson's Adventure Island

This game is hard and the infinite continues that allow it to be remotely playable are locked behind an easter egg at the end of the first level. But I found myself actually kind of addicted to its gameplay style; it's an intense little experience! The level design is generally on the simplistic side, with the overall gameplay taking a lot of influence from the original Super Mario Bros, including the use of a run button and the same boss every four levels. The music is catchy and the graphics are super charming, and overall this is a good and unique game. That being said, it is just too damn hard. I am being just a little generous with the rating, but I'd feel more comfortable with it if the difficulty were turned down a few notches. At least give me an invincibility period when I fall off the skateboard, you know?
