Title
A game I should like much more
I think Hollow Knight is a very, VERY good game- that being said, I don't think it's one that was fully able to captivate me in the experience of playing. That's less so me criticizing the game itself, but more so that the actual combat, and boss battle experience was never able to draw me in as effectively as I know it has for so many people who have played this game. To put it in a manner that's more exact, in a most games like this I usually either go for all the achievements, or at the very least every ending so I can fully experience the game 0the games story- but after acquiring the Hollow Knight ending, I felt like my time with the game was pretty much over. I didn't really feel too incentivized to go traverse the remainder of the map to acquire the final few charms, complete the Grim Troupe dlc, and especially not the Godmaster dlc. The challenges remaining didn't really feel like something I would enjoy after dipping my toes into them, and while I can imagine the remaining boss fights I had yet to experience were most likely worth the effort- after 25 hours I felt content with leaving the game there, at least for right now.
Insofar as things I wasn't exactly a fan of, I'll just rapid fire them because while none of them I believe to be outright flaws with the game, they were contributing factors that caused me to get somewhat tired of playing the game, and eventually drop it after finishing the base game:
-No matter how far I feel I progressed in the game, it always felt like it took unnecessarily long to navigate the map, and seeing as how massive the map actually is, it started to feel as if so much of my time spent in the game was just walking around and running past enemies with no real thought about it. While this is something that in any exploration based rpg may suffer from (ala Dark Souls), I could at least end up far closer to where I actually wanted to go to for one small item (such as looking for all the grubs, or finding a charm) instead of going to the nearest possible spot which would still usually be an area or two away from where I was trying to get to, all for a charm I really wouldn't use behind a secret wall I missed when initially combing through the areas.
-The combat. Overall the combat in the game is really good don't get me wrong, but there were a lot of moments that I felt like I was just brute forcing my way through it, instead of being able to properly engage with the mechanics of certain fights. This was most certainly a flaw with my approach and style of play, but after becoming so set in my way of doing this, it made it really REALLY hard to ever find a way to break out of it. This is something I can certainly get over if/when I return to the game, but (in my anecdotal experience) I wasn't driven to change from that loop. Also, this is something I actually felt was kind of pain, but the healing taking so long when so many bosses have such small windows to heal in made the process feel kind of worthless, and that is would just be more effective to seek out health upgrades so I wouldn't have to heal in combat, instead of becoming as in tune with the bosses patterns so I could find such a brutally narrow window. Even more side notey than previously, boss difficulty was certainly strange. Some early game bosses were harder than later game ones (ala Brooding Mawlek feeling weirdly much harder than the last boss, and frankly other bosses in the game, mostly because aforementioned healing and lack of tools- but still). It was never particularly an issue, but it was something that always felt like it was in the back of my mind.
And that's it. I have next to no problems with the game, and the ones I mentioned I think are really just personal notes that aren't actual flaws, but come down more than anything to taste.
All in all, Hollow Knight is certainly worth the money to play- and if it hooks you in then you have probably one of the most entrancing experiences with a game that by no counts *feels* like an indie developed title (albeit, indie titles in the contemporary sense do feel so fleshed out and complete that they might as well be the standard). Even if the game doesn't have that affect on you, it's still wildly fun. I have no idea if I'm ever going to return to this game, though I certainly do hope I give it another chance after some time removed from it so I can wholly embrace the genius of it that I hear so many others sing about it. For now, it's a game I truly respect and has left me very excited to see the future of Team Cherry and the hopeful release of Silksong- which I once again hope convinces me to return to it's predecessor to experience the remaining content and mayhaps get every remaining achievement. Regardless, I wholeheartedly recommend this game, it's so worth it for how much it costs.

I have 100 hours on this game and every second of it is amazing. I personally don't have the skill and patience required to play these soulsvania games. But this game is just different. The storyline, the atmosphere, it is just so entrancing. I am coming back to this game and its the third save.

Title
The Best of Its Genre.
An incredible story, game, and experience. I played Hollow Knight shortly after it came out, around 2018. I had dropped it for awhile but a few friends convinced me to pick it back up again a few months later and lord it was a fantastic decision. The atmosphere, music, and depressing story makes for a tragic but heartwarming experience. This game is best blind.

From the quiet moments around the Blue Lake, to the frantic boss rushes of the Pantheons, this game legitimately has it all. The mechanics and more technical aspects always stay refreshing, and are a joy to pick back up even years later.

That being said, I do not see much appeal to replay this game from beginning to the end. It is certainly a one and done, but in this games case, that is okay. There is hundreds of hours in the main story and post game content to keep anyone satisfied for a long amount of time.

I cannot wait for Team Cherry's sequel.

Truly an experience
Aesthetically pleasing, compositionally beautiful, difficult, rewarding, explorative, and humble genius. This game is an absolute must-play as it is not only as immersive as games can get, but it's truly fun and a work of art. If you're reading this, spend the 15 dollars and enjoy every second that you play of it. I can guarantee that you will.

DirtmouthChristopher Larkin

His work on this game pushed any limitations the game may have had previously. The beautiful and truly atmospheric noise makes you unable to do anything but be absorbed into the game. At all times the music perfectly complements the game, no matter where you go. Whether a moment is tense, explorative and inquisitive, dark and mysterious, morbid, or calm, there is a sound so perfectly representing that vibe that it becomes an integral part of the experience. In my eyes, 2 people did not make this game, as it wouldn't be the same without the 3rd: Christopher Larkin.

Title
This is one of the most charming indie games I've played in a long time, in fact were it not brutally difficult or even confusing with what you're meant to do, I would say this is a perfect game rather than merely being above average.

It took a while to come to this conclusion as I found myself in an unwinnable situation during my first playthrough due to going somewhere I wasn't meant to be until much later in the game. It's one of those games that allows you to encounter areas way sooner than recommended without even warning you of the consequences for doing so, which I feel can impact one's playthrough of the game. Even if you know what you're doing, it's still a challenge due to aggressive ai that rarely shows any mercy to our hero. This doesn't even factor in the true hero mode where dying is an immediate game over which I've yet to conquer as it was hard enough where I was merely sent back to a checkpoint in the first playthrough. Negatives out of the way, holy crap is this games presentation ADORABLE!!!!! I love the character designs and the setting of the game which appears to be an insect network which houses many of these creatures both friendly and hostile. It's easy to tell which is which even though they all share a similar design to each other, a great sign of artistry if I do say do myself. The combat is also top notch, naturally it is otherwise I’d have fewer positive things to say here given how brutal the ai is. There's also incentive to not die even with the checkpoint mechanic being active as you lose all of your currency for doing so and items being rather expensive. Of course, it's not all doom and gloom if this happens as the game gives you an opportunity to get it back by battling your ghost, however die before defeating it and your stuff is gone forever as the game saves automatically whenever you use a checkpoint.

It's a game that likes to kick your ass, however like most tough games, there a sense of satisfaction when overcoming its challenges. Check it out if you haven't already, it's worth your time and then some.

After around 10 hours, I feel I will probably finish it, but I doubt it'll become one of my favourites. Combat and movement are great (except for jump attacking, awkward due to using the same finger for both actions). Exploration is addictive. I love the damage system, which makes it literally impossible to die from a single mistake. The art direction is... fine. I find the music to be pretty bland, even irritating at times, but I understand why people like it.

One thing I hate is how (metaphorically) cheap the progression system is. I'm not sure if it's because the developers were afraid the game would be too short, or if they were afraid there would not be enough stuff to motivate acquiring geo (the game currency), but they blocked not only upgrades, but also basic quality of life things behind it (often also behind very limited upgrade slots). Player position on the map, geo collection helper (huge time saver), access to map markers, and even access to the very sparse fast travel and some respawn spots all have to be bought. This necessitates grinding and/or increased backtracking, the latter already bad due to many essential services being far from fast travel spots. I'm not gonna complain about a few obnoxious boss runbacks, since this is apparently part of the genre for whatever reason.

Kinda impressive to see a game like this have a comparable amount of ratings to a mammoth such as RDR2, shame literally nobody knows this game anywhere I go or they dismiss it as some lame sidescroller...
