Keiichi Maebara moves into the small village of Hinamizawa near the Gifu prefecture. He is warmly welcomed by the locals and joins an after-school game club where he bonds with his classmates: Rena, Mion, Satoko, and Rika. However, once he finds a crumpled old newspaper detailing a bizarre murder case, he becomes curious about the history of the village.
(question arcs) i have really complicated feelings on this so far. i think it definitely deserves the hype it gets, the characters are amazingly written and the mystery is really gripping but (say the line bart) it was really bogged down by the pacing. looking back on it so far i cant really imagine the story being trimmed that much without it losing a lot of its impact but its such a fucking slog in the moment that it makes me really hesitant to recommend it to anyone. still even though ive had massive parts of the answer arcs spoiled already im excited to see what they have in store

i just finished chapter 1. i didn't like it at all, it was completely bloated with filler and the actual, serious plot was a pretty generic horror story
for me the thing about the pacing is that, i think the idea of establishing the friendship of these characters to lower your guard is not bad on base level, but the way the game establishes their friendship is so fucking stupid and repetitive. it's written in the most cliche'd anime bullshit form possible and it feels so fake, like a person who never had a childhood friend group imagining what childhood friend groups are like. and it's so repetitive too, there's no actual character building or deep connections made which make the character conflict way, way less engaging. i don't care if the friendships between these characters is put into jeopardy because they never showcased that the connections they were making was anything emotionally meaningful
if you're going to criticize my comment don't be a snarky passive aggressive subtweeter and actually reply to it. and don't put words in my mouth either because i didn't even insinuate that i didn't like the entire game, just the first chapter; which is reasonably self-contained as a stand-alone story despite some loose ends and totals like 10-13 hours of playtime total, like the length of a full season of television, so i think developing an opinion at that point is totally reasonable. the only reason i haven't started the second chapter yet is because schoolwork has been piling up on my ass and i haven't gotten the chance, i'll probably finish it eventually and i don't doubt that it'll most likely improve or at the very least change at a certain point but i am just giving my thoughts on the game at the point i am right now and right now i'm not enjoying it
The atmosphere with the updated soundtrack is the most immersive in any piece of media I've experienced and I cannot imagine reading the question arcs with the original soundtrack
the classroom scene in tatarigoshi where keiichi tries rubbing sakoto's head and the twist at the very end of watanagashi are the only two scenes which stuck out to me as something i really liked so far
a lot of these ideas are cool but very rarely does it actually result in something which is engaging to actively read. maybe i just don't like the amateurish, light novel-esque writing of visual novels idk
