No matter how much I play it, I just keep thinking Tempest realised this idea far better. Tempest also has very useful controls that travel in a clockwise direction, rather than the confusing D-pad layout of the Gyruss controls.
Credit where its due though, Gyrus is indeed a graphical feast for the eyes and another step in the evolution of game graphics where Galaga left off. The game also plays off much like a circular Galaga, with enemies taking up to beautiful patterns when they're filling the screen, though it also gives you a lot of room to breathe, pick a power-up, and dodge incoming bullets and asteroids, before getting ready to cut the enemies down.

An absolutely cracking game. What first drew me in was the soundtrack - a corking version of J.S. Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565". The music really upped the excitement factor, and the thumping low frequencies generated by the stand-up cabinet were far and away the best heard in an arcade up to that point.
Gyruss[ジャイラス] owes a lot (all?) of its gameplay to Galaga. Waves of aliens sweep through the screen to assemble in a group and then attack a few at a time in an effort to wipe you out. Just like Galaga there are challenge stages, and the only real difference aside from the design of the aliens is the perspective of the gameplay. In Gyruss[ジャイラス] you are continually travelling forwards toward the centre of the screen, and your ship can move anywhere around the outside perimeter. It's a fairly good attempt at 3D in a 2D world.
No matter whether I had had a great game or a hopeless one, I always walked away from the machine feeling pumped up.
