Title
best triple a game in recent years
amazing game; a little more subdued and less absurd than its predecessors but the endearing father-son dynamic makes up for this jarring tone shift. in fact, I think I actually enjoy the tone of this game more because it feels more authentic and nuanced than the mindless thrill ride attributed to its predecessors - not to say this game doesn't have its spectacle, it absolutely has its moments.

also, the combat is fucking amazing... the combat is very methodical and strategic blah blah blah.. also Kratos's axe has a real weight to it

the looting, crafting, and armor/weapon system fucking suck though. the needlessly complicated user interface amplifies this problem - everything is so cluttered and unintuitive to find.

overall a super fucking good game, very excited to play its sequel

So much fun, I found myself completely immersed in the world and story, despite the fact that the mythology is only really a backdrop in this game. The actor for the boy did a great job, and you could really feel Kratos' progression as a character. Combat-wise, everything felt great with the exception of some unnecessarily difficult outlier parts, and I would totally play this one again. Probably my second favorite God of War game after 3.

Title
“God of War” is a welcome soft-reboot of a franchise that started to grow stale after “Ascension”.

The early portions of the game are disorientingly relaxed, with Kratos enjoying nature walks and boat trips in an open map full of collectibles and even a bunch of side-quests. We have skill trees to unlock, equipment to upgrade, and materials to collect like in an action RPG.

The combat system has a considerably slower pace and lower number of enemies on screen, but got more technical and varied. Atreus works as a supporting character: his bow and arrows being incredibly useful, and his warnings help you avoiding damage on several occasions. However, I was disappointed by the little variety of enemies: we have the same few monsters rehashed throughout the game in different colors and elements (fire/ice). We are also missing the epic boss fights, with creatures first introduced as mid-bosses usually becoming regular enemies as we progress.

It's hard to think of it as a traditional "God of War" entry, but I can't deny that I enjoyed the experience. The focus on narration and world-building gave a new depth to the series, and technically we are obviously in front of one of the greatest technical achievements on Play Station 4. After a dozen hours, the gameplay and plot start to get a little repetitive, but the action eventually kicks in with new locations, additional weapons, and faster plot development until we finally reach an epic final boss in true "God of War" spirit.

Title
Yet another 'cinematic' game that doesn't actually have interesting storytelling. Sorry; the central relationship of Kratos and Atreus is played-out. We've seen it in The Road, The Walking Dead, The Last of Us; plenty of other stuff, but notably those given God of War's setting that evokes post-apocalyptic zombie material more than any actual Norse or Greek mythology. I don't consider any of those particularly great, because they're all playing out basic themes that extend well past their genre. Father doesn't know how to be a good parent, is very strict in the violent post-apocalypse, child begins to resent them, father learns to show their love. Obviously it's not exactly the same in all of these, but it's a really simple story, and gamers kinda show their ass when they praise the story as a masterpiece while the filmed counterparts are more or less forgotten. (Though I suppose the original novel The Road has earned its keep.)

Sure, as a 'cinematic' game there are some cool moments; many of the battle cutscenes have exciting choreography, and the one-take concept is neat if ultimately meaningless. (Not really that impressive when you're not using a live camera.) Some of the performances are fun, if not especially good; mostly I was amused they made Jeremy Davies (who was fantastic as Dickie Bennett on Justified) the main villain, Baldur, who doesn't seem much like a Norse god but most certainly has Davies' mannerisms and vocal tics. (Though Baldur ultimately plays a small role in the plot; this story would have been better without a villain entirely, but then that would be too inventive.) But as a narrative this feels obviously stitched together, especially when it comes to merging it with the gameplay. After the fight with Mogi and Magni, Atreus becomes very ill, a point of genuine concern for Kratos; but as you leave the temple, Atreus says he's totally fine, because the game needs him to be okay for any exploration or side quests you do before you move onto the next area. (Exploration which is totally superfluous; more on that later.) If you go directly to your story point, though, Atreus immediately becomes sick again. It's awkward, stilted storytelling, and later it becomes very unsubtle as Atreus does a complete 180 after learning he's a god, turning from a kid who wants to help everyone to an egotistical asshole even meaner than his father. One level later, he's back to normal. There's no natural progression for these characters, just a series of plot points that the writers want to hit to drive the gameplay forward.

And I think if they wanted to do that, then they should've focused more on making it a linear game. Because it's also got another example of AAA bloat, by adding very unnecessary RPG and open world elements to the game. One of the core appeals, to me, of an action game is the idea that you can learn the mechanics to actually improve as a player and become more fluid, elegant, exciting in battle. That's definitely present here: the axe is very versatile weapon that lets you switch battle styles on the fly, and when you get Kratos's classic sword-whips (which I didn't think were going to show up, and I was very excited to see return) that adds another layer of depth to the battle. (Atreus isn't well integrated into the battle, though - he adds a bit to the game, but I feel like that button could be used for something with much more depth.) But there's also all this other shit you need to do if you want to be able to actually function at a high level - you have to level up your stronger abilities, find resources to upgrade your weapons, choose from a whole bunch of different armour sets. None of these RPG elements feel like they're central to the actual gameplay, mere window dressing that requires you to do a bunch of sidequests and exploration that have little to do with the actual combat. The sidequests aren't terribly interesting, and the world isn't fun to explore - by and large it still feels very linear, and Kratos's means of traversal aren't dynamic; lots of Uncharted-style leaping and climbing.

What I would have liked, then, is a pure linear game that gives you resources as you proceed that lets you focus more directly on the combat - and as a plus, this might help tighten up the story more. Give me the option to use more than two special abilities at a time, and don't make me grind out experience to make them viable if I want to try them out. Add some more enemy types - ridiculous how many times they make you fight variations of the same miniboss - and make fighting them require a little more thought. (I guess what I'm saying is that I want Bayonetta.) And while we're there, either improve the puzzles or cut them entirely and find some other way to pace the levels out better - the puzzles in this game generally amount to 'find the right thing to interact with' or 'throwing your axe at a corner in the room' and it usually feels like a dull waste of time. (Doubly so when it's an optional treasure chest, where I want what's inside to be able to better enjoy the combat, but I have to do something I hate in order to get there. Don't make me do something unrelated and half-assed to get to the good stuff.)

The annoying thing is that I can't even call this a bad game, not really. The combat is good, and ultimately the combat is a lot of the game. Sink enough money into an HD action game and, as long as it's functional, it's going to be pretty enjoyable no matter what. But it's annoying to see it constantly bogged down under so much other crap, especially when some of that crap is precisely what's being praised in the game. Marvel movies have rotted everyone's brains, I swear to God.

Great game, mostly cuz I enjoy the action, characters, visuals, world building and graphics. Some gripes but not too many. It’s personally a good game imo, the mechanics and combat are so fun, the world looks amazing and cold and gorgeous.

100%ing this game on the highest difficulty sure was an experience. GMGoW actually forces you learn how to fight (positioning, timing, combos, etc.) when i first played this on a lower difficulty it felt like r1 + square + runic attack spam was good enough to clear pretty much every encounter. better combat than any fromsoft game not named sekiro
