Four uniquely powered warriors battle through four realms, vanquishing the invading evildoers in each and gaining the power necessary to defeat the treacherous demon Skorne.
This review is for the console version rather than the original arcade version, if what I say here is odd or bizarre, you'll know why. With that out of the way, we have the console version of a popular arcade game which has its flaws but overall is a lot of fun.
The main issue here is how monotonous it can get after a while as the main gameplay is fighting off waves of enemies that endlessly spawn unless you destroy their spawning area, even these have the tendency to respawn after a while which can make clearing out enemies somewhat redundant. Thankfully there's a ton of spells and power ups to aid you on your quest which can help defeat these hordes of enemies, the best being the potions which provide instant kills to large groups of enemies including the dreaded wraith who can only be killed with these potions or if it drains enough of your health. Health is carried over from stage to stage and can only be replenished by eating food either by finding it in a stage or purchasing it from the shop in the main hub area. Said shop is filled with useful items that you can find on your quest but is readily available provided you have enough money to make the purchases with the levels filled to the brim with treasure to boost your wealth. There's no real penalty for dying in a stage other than being sent back to the main hub without the items you collected in the level, this is only an issue during your first playthrough of each level as you're required to release the magic bonded to obelisks in each level as well as finding runes in order to fight the main antagonist of the game. There's a secondary antagonist that can be fought by defeating four of the bosses in each of the realms you're transported to, while its possible to kill these bosses without any assistance, it's best to find a hidden weapon that will drain their health at the start of each fight which are very hidden in different stages in different realms, thus adding to the incentive to explore these stages without dying in them. It's because if these fetch quests that the game is a ton of fun as they provide challenge into each of the stages which are all well designed and have many clever puzzles that reward you with goodies to aid you on your quest. I will say the enemies are also unique as we have ogres, mountain demons, animated suits of armour, squires, zombies and many more. We also have four playable characters each with their strengths and weaknesses that encourage both replay value and multiplayer mode where two players can tackle the campaign together with even the second player being able to tag in and out whenever they please. I will say the graphics are a bit meh, obviously a downgrade from how detailed the arcade version is, however the soundtrack is amazing as it has catchy tunes that fit in perfectly with the setting in each level.
It's got its issues which I'm sure are made worse by their comparisons to the arcade version, however I thoroughly enjoy this game and believe many who find the setting and premise interesting will as well.

A boring and repetitive button masher with needlessly convoluted controls. Maybe it was better in the arcade, but I wouldn't know. On N64 at least, Gauntlet Legends is a middle-of-the-road action RPG that hasn't aged particularly well.
