Twenty years before the events of Binding Blade, a malicious group known as the Black Fang are terrorizing the people of Elibe. Utilizing creatures called morphs, their leader, a man named Nergal, is stealing people's life force, known as quintessence. Lord Eliwood of Pherae begins taking action against the mysterious group when they kidnap his father, Lord Elbert. Eliwood and his best friend, Lord Hector of Ostia, set out to foil the group's plans and save Eliwood's father.
The pre-GBA Fire Emblem games (which were Japan-only) had a much greater scope and grander battles, but the series made an incredible transition to handhelds. Maps are smaller and so is your team, but there's enough variety and sub-objectives to keep you entertained, many of which you'll end up establishing yourself. Unless you're willing to restart constantly, FE is not a game where you can get super attached to individual characters, because you'll probably have to sacrifice a few of them to push through. It does not indulge the completionist mindset: stat growths are governed by RNG, completely unpredictable things will happen, and you never know when a better character will join. It's messy, and forces you to gamble. Due to this, the difficulty is accomodating enough to allow for mistakes, but you don't play FE for the super-deep strategy; you play it to throw the dice with a bunch of stylish anime characters. Fire Emblem is a great pick-up-and-play strategy RPG, and way more replayable than later games in the series.

Painfully easy and slow paced game. Almost every map can be done by simply creeping slowly forward, drawing out one enemy at a time and swarming it. The more significant decision making is in how you manage your team. When it comes to this, the game does almost everything I hate in RPGs. Good decisions cannot be made without knowledge of what happens in the future and which characters have better stat growths than the others. Often I found myself having invested resources into characters who too quickly reached the level cap, thus causing any additional experience they get to go to waste, or being given new characters who are strictly superior to preexisting ones, meaning anything invested in the now obsolete character was also wasted. Of course the game is so easy that these optimizations are irrelevant, but I've never played the hard mode so it's possible that they become necessary (and what a torment that must be).
As an aside, the menus in the game are almost indescribably bad. Just far more strangely constructed and difficult to navigate than a simple menu has any reason to be. I can't even wrap my head around it.

The 7th entry of the franchise, and the first one to come to the west. Even know, its unfortunate how much this series in under looked, often people just recognize the blue uniforms because of the appearance of Ike in the Smash Bros games. This is a tactical rpg series, in many ways similar to Final Fantasy Tactics and the latter XCOM. This was the first one i have played, and left me a fan of the series.
The battle system is so good. On a superficial level it seems simple enough, but as you progress through the game and find more about its mechanics like the weapon triangle and the importance of each stat things get really cerebral. The last levels of the game are really hard if you have not been getting the most xp out of the previous battles. i was only able to do it through save states. There are also multiple items and recruits you can acquire in battles which are kinda hidden, so its easy to miss out on really important stuff. And at the same time you have to focus on the enemy!
The story is nothing particularly well made, but the characterization of each recruit either through the story or battles is really what makes losing a recruit something i tried to avoid at all points. In XCOM i was afraid to lose units because they were valuable to me as warriors, in Fire Emblem you add an emotional layer to the characters over their usefulness in battle. Its really satisfying to grow your characters to the point were they can beat 20 straight battles without any outside help. This means that the game can be a bit frustrating when you are trying to not lose any party members against seemingly unssurmountable odds, but at the same time the satisfaction of beating the level is really great. Despite its childlike presentation, its definitly a very hard game.
Overal its a fantastic title for anyone who is into tactical rpg's. It has some areas which could be improved upon, mainly on an audiovisual level as well as some difficulty balancing.
