Title
Final Fantasy XV is really two different games. One game is a charming, fun side quest simulator. The second game is a really mediocre linear RPG that tries to rely entirely on the mediocre combat. The good thing about this is that the first game is 40 hours long, and the second game is only six.
The combat is extremely simple, to a fault. You hold down the dodge button to dodge indefinitely, and hold down the attack button to attack indefinitely. There's also a lock-on button you can hold. Magic takes a while to get used to, since you have to manually aim it, but it's powerful enough to make it worth it. The combat works, but is not going to win any prizes.

The first game has a story, but it's so sparse between the open world segments that it doesn't really matter. You'll spend your time driving around the continent, doing random side quests for random people, like any open world RPG.
The four members of the party have unique dialogue for each side quest, not just the protagonist who accepts the quest. Each party member has a reaction to what they've just agreed to do, and to whom they've agreed to do it for. Everyone likes Cidney (especially Prompto), but no one likes Dino, for example. Sometimes, while you're driving, your party members will ask if you'd stop somewhere along the way to do something they personally want to do, like see a tourist spot or take a photo at a vista. Sometimes when you camp, a party member will wake up early and ask if you want to go do something nearby while the other two sleep. It's touches like these that make the characters feel alive, and become more memorable.
After every time you rest, you get to look at the photos Prompto has taken since the last time you rested. Some will be scripted photos of plot characters and events, but most of them will just be random shots from your journey, of combat or hanging around the towns, or sometimes group shots of everyone. It's a neat touch that really adds to the game, especially at the end, when Noctis wants to take one of the photos with him, and the game makes you look through them all to choose one.

The second game is rough. Once you get to Altissia, the story begins to take over, and the tone shifts dramatically from a fun road trip with friends to a plot that tries to be sad and emotionally-charged, but it just doesn't work.
First, Noctis's fiancee is killed, but there's no reason to care about her at all. She's only shown up in flashbacks to that point, and in those, all she does is go on about "ye destiny". Unlike the main party, she never gets any fun dialogues, or any window into why Noctis even cares about her. They talk about a flower one time?
The worst part is immediately after when they reveal that, in the preceeding fighting, one of your party members fucking went blind. You never see it happen, and he's just like "oh well sacrifices must be made".
After this, there's a jarring timeskip. Noctis's fiancee dies, and Ignis goes blind, but in the very next scene, Gladio just tells him to cut the shit and man up. Yes, they say that it is weeks later, but it's around a minute for the player.
The next gameplay segment after that is entirely comprised of Gladio bitching at you for moving slightly too fast, since Ignis needs to go slow. Even when he just said "flick the other switch quick!!!", and you run to the other switch, he says "STOP BEING SO SELFISH :(((((".
After this is a solo segment that takes absolutely forever, where you run through identical corridors while the antagonist talks at you forever. Nice.
After all of that drudgery, there's a timeskip, and you see the world completely overrun by daemons. Seeing Gauldin Quay absolutely wrecked was actually kind of cool. The party reunites, and heads for the last area of the game.
The very last area of the game is actually pretty good. It feels more like the first 40 hours of the game, rather than everything that just happened. It's mostly combat, but it feels like one of the side quest dungeons more than anything. It's very nice that the game ends on a high note, because the six hours immediately preceding the ending weren't very good, to put it lightly.

So, after all that, I still really liked this game and would recommend a playthrough. It's pretty cheap now, honestly. If you don't want to put up with the bad parts at the end, that's cool, because almost everything good is at the beginning, before it gets bad.
If you enjoy open world RPGs, side quests, and slowly cruising the open road, I highly recommend playing this game, at least until you get to Altissia.

it’s a shame the actual plot to this game is locked behind 5+ dlcs and a clusterfuck of tie-in media

honestly one of my favorite games. there's so much I find insufferable about this game and in many ways I hate how it twisted the series. the sidequests are god-awful, the story's presentation is horrific (regarding what's in the game; the DLCs are pretty good), and I only really like the main cast. but there are no FFs I want to return to as much as I want to return to Eos. I love the camaraderie, I love the open world (kinda), I love the day/night cycles and the story in broadstrokes and certain key moments are some of my favorite moments in any video game. It's my favorite 7/10 and I'd rather play this than most of my 8s and 9s.

It's not. This team was its own thing, and they eventually worked on Forspoken.

Actually, the team who made FF7Remake and Rebirth was primarily comprised devs who made the FFXIII trilogy. Remake has a lot of similarities to the XIII trilogy in general (in good ways), and it's all the same composers (primarily Hamuzu and Suzuki). Naoki Hamaguchi for example (who's the Remake trilogy director) worked on the entire XIII trilogy, but not XV.

They still have 10/10 game in them. There are moments of such brilliance in this one, the way the main characters interact with each other, how it builds a bond between the player and the cast, is incredible. The modern touches are really invigorating. If not the development hell, this could've been one of the best games. In a way, it's a classic Final Fantasy mess.

Thought the game was pretty generic in terms of story and gameplay, but the characters are charming enough to carry a lot of its woes. Theres also menus which I found to be insanely clunky. Not being able to save inside a dungeon is really really annoying.
