Title
second generation FFXI player's biased take
My father originally fell into this game in 2002/3 when it came free with his new PS2. I was 2 at the time. My father would continue to play for a decade, even letting me play sometimes.

I bought a subscription to the game last year during the 'Rona, and I understand why someone would be willing to spend a decade on the game. Most of the gameplay is semi-boring, repetitive stuff that takes hours, but the atmosphere of the game is incredible. Lots of music that can dictate the feel of any location, from the main 3 cities of Windurst, Bastok, and San d'Oria, to the far away places. DLC only makes the game feel even more like a fever dream, with places like Ru'Aun Gardens, Al'Taieu, and Ra'Kaznar looking straight out of a high fantasy dreamscape.

I absolutely adore the job system. The job/subjob style allows for so many different combinations and strategies to develop, and is the main reason I stick around this game and not other MMORPGs. With jobs like Red Mage (the one I have fully geared), you can completely change your role with a subjob. Need a damage dealer? Use Ninja subjob to dual wield your flaming swords, or Black Mage to boost your magic damage. Support? White Mage or Scholar subjob makes you magically versatile. Tank? Nobody in my linkshell lets me tank. But with 22 total jobs, you have an insane amount of combinations to test and try and discuss with other people.

The biggest flaw holding back the game though is how much a new player has to do in order to reach the endgame content with a group. From scratch, you have 99 levels of grinding on at least one job as well as another grind to 49, and in between you need most of the story content in order to get the best weapons/armor. This as well as an extra 20 "item levels" to hit 119 means that a new player playing with an experienced group is best off sitting back as a healer or debuff. However, nobody ever said joining a group in an MMORPG didn't take sacrifice.

Overall this is one game I always want to revisit, but the subscription requirement is inconvenient as hell for new players. If you want a good dose of Final Fantasy tho, play for a couple months and try finding a good Linkshell. You'll enjoy it.

Why are people rating this so low? It's one of the best MMORPGs I've played.

idk, but it has always annoyed me that they've made their MMO's numbered games in the series. It's just confusing for newcomers.

lmao me for example, who was thinking that X-2 was the actual FF11.
