Final Doom

I will not stand for this TNT Evilution hate. It's perfectly fine. Yes the hitscan enemies can get obnoxious and some level layouts are... highly suspect but it's still a decently fun and creative wad with some memorable levels that are still fun to play to this day and provide a nice variety compared to vanilla DOOM 2. 7/10

As for The Plutonia Experiment, it is infuriatingly difficult and completely deserving of it's infamy, but you can't deny the level design. Much of Plutonia's levels look great and are full of creative areas and enemy placement crafted to make this expansion as difficult as it is. The Casaldis are great level designers and knew what they were doing, and they put their skills to work making levels that are not only quality, but also very challenging... like very. The intuitive level design and high difficulty make Plutonia hold up better today than TNT Evilution for more experienced players. 8/10

But for me, the dumb teenage girl with a taste for violent video games who became obsessed with that one game her dad played in college, I prefer TNT Evilution. If I'm being unbiased though, it's levels are better designed than the somewhat convoluted hitscanner hell that is Evilution. I'm just made because I suck at the game.

This is a two for one deal which has been very prevalent in gaming over the years, in this case we have official mods for doom ii that were authorised by id software and even had some assistance from the team with some of the levels in both mods.

Both of them are worth your time, however I should warn anyone reading this that the plutonia experiment is by far the hardest game in the entire franchise without being unfair even on the lower difficulty levels. This is due to enemy placement as well as how scarce the weapons are on the earliest levels, although you do get immense satisfaction for clearing these stages so it's totally worth testing your skills on this mod (to say nothing about the infamous maze of archviles level.) Tnt evilution isn't as frustratingly difficult as plutonia, however it makes up for that by experimenting with some of the engines core mechanics (including a section that incorporates the voodoo doll mechanic the game has.) Like plutonia, it was made with love and care which is more than I can say for other mods made over the years.

Final Doom is the Faith/Void split of video games.

Final Doom is essentially professional fan made levels, TNT is the lower quality one where levels are very hit or miss, while Plutonia are some of the most challenging but well-designed Doom maps made by 2 brothers who wanted to make the Doom experience more challenging. The problem with TNT is the maps tend to have ugly design often, and just thrown enemies at you because they can. Its like they had a random enemy generator and placed them wherever they felt they could. More of the maps in Evilution are frustrating than fun, and the good maps in there come nowhere close to touching the original Doom or Doom II maps. Plutonia is fun but tough, enemies are often grouped together in hordes and they throw the tough enemies at you right away instead of there being a progression of working up to them. Plutonia has some really good levels but you can tell they are fan made and lack the polish or professionalism from the more classic Doom levels. Its kind of how the Thief games had tons of fan created content and missions but even the best fans could come nowhere close to replicating the best missions in those games. Either way its still more Doom and I love the way Doom plays, and even if the design isn't the best its still cool to go into new places and kill demons, and both these are long enough to be their own games. Sure they pale in comparison to the original Doom games but considering these weren't created by a big studio and just from fans is impressive enough.
