Title
Far Cry 2
Many action stories produced by the modern entertainment industry (especially in the United States) follow a specific narrative “mold” where the main character, an individual from the western “civilized” world, is sent to a poor, “uncivilized” country torn by war. The protagonist's goal is to complete a heroic mission, usually consisting of somehow saving the innocent portion of the population from the savage evildoers (who are depicted as solely responsible for the conflict), acting in the interests of both countries and reaching a satisfying, morally unambiguous conclusion. This, of course, serves as wish fulfillment for the country that holds narrative power over the production, as it provides a comfortable fantasy that would justify their actions in the real world. It may not be directly government-funded propaganda, but it reflects how the citizens from these western countries (again, almost exclusively the United States) see themselves: as necessary saviors of foreign nations. The main character's brutal killings are then framed as heroic acts, essential for the population's liberation. "Sugarcoated" is an understatement. This framing completely sanitizes any involvement from the powerful attacker, painting all of it as heroic altruism, a mission to "introduce democracy to the primitive people". In these narratives, the third world and its instability are objectified, turned into a tool to deliver both entertainment and political reaffirmation.

Far Cry 2 completely rejects this notion and offers, in its place, amoral realism. You start the game with the objective of killing an arms dealer, "the bastard who sells guns to both sides", as the game describes him. However, any pretense of morality is completely discarded less than an hour into the playthrough. After a brief introduction, you begin your journey by doing mercenary work, oftentimes war crimes, for both factions behind the conflict. You are not a hero, there are no good intentions here, you're a foreigner murdering Africans for money. Like everyone else involved in this war, you maim and kill for selfish gains. Far Cry 2 opts for a realistic depiction of the conflicts that are so sanitized by the entertainment industry at large. It doesn't shy away from recognizing the western presence in these countries, too. Half of your bosses are white and have European or North American origins. All of them show the same degree of disdain towards human life. You'll hear their attempts at morally justifying their actions through a simplified rhetoric: "They brought this on themselves", "Some destruction is necessary for the greater good", etc. It’s a reflection of the modern “imperialist” logic. But there is no justification for cutting off water supplies, killing professors and destroying medicine storages.
The game doesn't explicitly judge your actions, but it presents them without a filter. There isn't a moral bias to exempt your atrocities. It’s clear that you're just a killer, another pawn aiding the continuity of this conflict. What’s unique about Far Cry 2's narrative is that there isn't an active author's voice condemning or congratulating you, things are presented as they are, and you're the one to comprehend the immorality of your actions. However, it isn’t a game without a statement. Several literal elements help paint a clear message. There is a deliberate aura of dread permeating every moment in this experience, effectively enforced through visuals and game design choices, that helps set the tone of utter helplessness in a collapsing society.
The aesthetics of decay and misery are intensely palpable, Far Cry 2’s Africa looks unbearable to inhabit. Outposts are made of metal debris, safehouses are claustrophobic wooden huts, people are dirty and injured. All of this is presented through a dry, overwhelmingly saturated color palette that makes the game uncomfortable to look at (the graphics are quite nice, though).
This visually and narratively decaying world serves as the perfect backdrop to a gameplay loop built to oppress you. Enemies are aggressive, accurate and deal high damage. Guns jam frequently and healing plays a slow animation that locks you in place and cancels itself whenever you’re hit. Outside of the rare safehouses and towns, your safety is never guaranteed, as an enemy vehicle could always be rapidly rushing your position. In my personal experience, I thought the game was a little too forgiving when set to Hardcore difficulty, but too limiting when set to Infamous. While the former allows you to engage in interesting strategies in the middle of a dynamic combat, the latter forces you to find a rock, tree or car, crouch behind it and never leave cover until everyone is dead. That’s boring. I believe Infamous is designed to provide a dynamic and challenging experience to those who are already experienced with the game, which is not my case. A perfect difficulty (for me, at least) would have the higher damage taken and lower ammo count from Infamous with more fragile, less accurate enemies. In this sense, Far Cry 2 doesn’t fully succeed in its oppressive gameplay design. It’s either too easy or too boring. It’d be unfair to call the game unfun, however. Regardless of difficulty, the gameplay is fluid, allowing you multiple approaches to each scenario and providing you with opportunities to plan your actions ahead of time. I found myself making quick, unusual decisions in the middle of combat to maximize safety and resources, such as choosing not to blow up an enemy vehicle so I could steal it later or doing a sudden sideways drift near an enemy outpost in order to use my own car as cover. Your strategies and goals can change in the middle of every encounter, making combat dynamic and entertaining to engage with.
Traversing the environment is often a hassle. No fast travel means you’ll have a map shoved in your face almost every time you’re not shooting people, as if you were playing a very sick, twisted version of Firewatch. The difficulty in traveling is essential for a pure experience, but this aspect could have been implemented with more grace. Two or three additional bus stops scattered around the map would have still made traveling long distances essential (making you vulnerable for long periods of time) while alleviating some of the duller aspects of checking a map every 3 seconds to make sure you’re on the right track. I’m exceptionally awful at spatial localization, though, so that might be a more personal problem.
Your journey is, for the most part, aimless. The story feels static, there is no sense of progression and nothing you do makes any significant difference. Even the ending sequence makes it clear that your efforts came to nothing. It reflects the main character, an emotionless mercenary disconnected from reality who is concerned only with profit and satisfaction. The protagonist serves as a representation of the unthinking player, the type of individual to engage with a game like this from a purely indulgent perspective, fully embracing the role of psychopath murderer assigned to them and never stopping to consider the context surrounding their actions. The main character doesn’t become a villain, he has always operated following the same cynical approach toward existence: It is worth trading countless human lives in exchange for profit. “I used to be you”, says the Jackal. There are no heroes in Far Cry 2. There are no villains either. Only war remains when you annihilate humanity.

Title
abandons absolutely everything about far cry 1 which is a shame, in favor for open world african driving simulator. the combat is quite satisfying, just the lack of quest variation and the utter amount of game time panning through driving to the next objective then driving back for a mission (or driving to a bus station) really makes the game a chore to play. thats all i can say, the combat is rewarding, but it usually only lasts for 20-30 seconds (once you arrive at the objective) so its a huge let down, then everything else is chore busywork and its awful.

you always have someone racing up to you from check points while you're just desperately trying to get to the next story mission, slowing you down even more, making you get out of your car to kill them, then spend 10+ seconds repairing your car. every 5 mins minimum. for a 2008 game the graphics and immersion are pretty top notch for me, yeah brown & bloom but it makes sense geographically. the technology side of things is even unmatched by some recent titles, such as the fire physics and wind effects on the trees,

it's a very immersive experience. the weapon jamming is a neat addition, how you can't pickup enemy weapons and expect them to work at 100% capacity, forcing you to get upgrades is kinda cool. theres a lot of little small things that are really nice, they add up, but they cant make up for the overwhelming negatives... you can spend the entire game grinding side quests for loot and different weapons, but it really doesn't matter at all. the ending is a total let down, and just kicks you back to the main menu. it's shitty. theres so much that went right in the game, but ultimately way more went wrong...

positives

+ ("africa" by toto plays)

neutrals

o well, here it is. for better or worse, the prototypical ubisoft open world formula, in its infancy. love it or loathe it, this game reflects the stepping stone that approach had to go through, warts and all

o there's an amusing if annoying nihilism to the game, marked by the fact that every non player character that you encounter outside the main city has an uncontrollable urge to run you over with their car

o the game's visuals have not aged well. for all its innovative effects, the bland color palette and jaggies on console makes the scenery, and the characters shooting at you in that scenery, indistinguishable

o combat is entertaining but shallow. enemies have little variation, use similar tactics, and the open-air locations offer little opportunity for flair other than by playing as a sniper or running people over

negatives

- the developers had little idea how to make use of the open world design, with navigating between objectives using the immersively distracting map taking up the vast majority of the game's playtime

- none of the mechanics designed to encourage exploration succeed, from the bland diamond collect-a-thon to the enemy outposts that respawn instantaneously, leaving the world quite bland

- the malaria thing has got to be one of the most blatant game mechanics designed to specifically constrain the player when convenient to the game that i've ever seen. it's actually really funny

FC2 is better than 3 & 4
Not quite as good as 5 but is definitely better than 6. This was where the Far Cry formula still hasn't been exhausted and predictable.

Don't believe the hype, this is not one of those misunderstood intense harrowing games that makes a virtue out of a hostile world. I appreciate that's what they were going for here, but the execution falls flat on its face. Far Cry 2 is an ugly, wildly repetitive, thoroughly unpleasant trek through unremittingly brown-hued corridors, disguised as jungles, that are pinched off by endlessly respawning enemy checkpoints. Its attempts at immersiveness are ruthlessly kneecapped by the gamey artifice of its gameplay design and environments. Its storytelling is as drab and desiccated as its visuals. It is lifeless, soulless, joyless, humorless, and an absolute drag to play.

Title
I'm going to begin this review with a confession: Far Cry 2 is my favorite game in the Far Cry series.

Since that one was so well received, let me try an admission, instead: Far Cry 2 is probably the least popular game in the Far Cry series.

It is my favorite game in the series because of the overall "attitude" of the game. It is everything Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is not. It is the very antithesis of Blood Dragon: Where Blood Dragon revels in being irreverent, ridiculous, and detached from reality, Far Cry 2 is gritty, realistic, and dark. It is a modern retelling of The Heart of Darkness, in which you play a mercenary hunting an arms dealer in a fictional African country, all the while battling malaria.

It is not the most open world. You are not a bullet sponge. Health does not regenerate, and in fact guns will jam on you based on how dirty they are. There isn't even a skill tree or a quick melee button (you have to manually switch to your machete). However, it is probably the single most immersive gave I've played in a long time if not ever, and a fantastic story takes you through a unique setting not often seen (or done well) in games.

Gameplay: Far Cry 2 is dated. It's not unplayable, but if you've recently played some of the other Far Cry games then the absence of some features is certainly conspicuous. However, the guns have punch, the player is fragile, fire is dangerous (it's a dry African setting), and the game reeks of realism. Yes, reeks. The main reasons people hated this game were because your character has malaria and because guns jam. Guns jamming is avoidable but you do have to address the malaria from time to time. It plays like a survival game, because you have to struggle to win (without it being too punishing). There's no skill tree and you have to really work for your equipment upgrades. While this isn't for everyone, if you go in expecting this kind of gameplay, you're going to enjoy the game more than someone going in blind. 8/10

Graphics/Visual Experience: While the game is old, the graphics aren't too bad. I go back and play this every once in a while and I'm blown away by some of the nature scenes. The game is truly impressive when compared to other games released at the time and that gives it some true staying power. The environment is immersive (the first game I ever actually got lost in: The first day I played it, I played it for 12 hours straight) and while it's not in the same way characters in Skyrim have complete lives, it's still capable of sucking you in if you let it. The score that follows accounts for both the game being dated but still capable of impressing me: 7.75/10

Sound: The song from the title screen is still on my phone somewhere. Guns don't always have a bassy sound but always feel like they have some punch. Ambient/background noise is done well, gives the environment some life without having wild animals like 3 and 4 do. 7.5/10

Replayability: Not as much as the later games in the series. The main draw of 2 is the immersion and story. While the environment can suck you in, it's not particularly fun to explore because you don't get the feeling of missing out on interesting things as you drive from place to place. If you're like me you'll want to play and play until you finish the story, but there is a hard ending and that also kills post-story replayability. 5.5/10

How it Runs: It's still a demanding game. I've played games released in late 2015 that made my computer run hot less often than this game. However, there are very rarely spikes in the resources the game needs to play smoothly. Physics aren't too intense, the worst the lag will probably get is when there's a bunch of fire on the screen. This is the first game in the series with fire propagation, which they certainly wanted to show off. They actually had to set a limit because during testing, there were times when the entire in-game world was set on fire without the limit in place.

this game is the ultimate gaslight. everybody says this is the best far cry and such a classic, and then you play it and it's nothing. i know people like to describe stuff like Gears of War as a 2000's "brown shooter" or whatever, but at least that game had some level of style, substance, and grit.

the fact that this is often considered the best in the series is NOT a good look after six main entries

This is basically what you get if you let someone like Crowbat work on a game. They'll add in cool details but forget to make the actual game.

I respect how nihilistic this game is. Also, best fire in any game ever!
