Fallout: New Vegas - Lonesome Road

Lonesome Road's main theme is the idea that all of your actions, no matter how small, may have large consequences, even if you don't remember taking the action at all.
Ulysses frequently reminds you throughout that your character (before the game started) caused all of this to happen to The Divide. The main opponents in this expansion, the marked men, were created through your actions. Their regenerating health and murderous intent were your doing. The package that you brought to The Divide detonated nuclear warheads hidden underground. The radiation kept them alive, but the vicious sandstorms of The Divide tore the flesh from their faces. Since we all know what a human is and looks like, the marked men being as they are is instantly understandable.

Unfortunately, this theme is undercut by the second new enemy type, the tunnelers. Ulysses says that the tunnelers were unearthed by earthquakes in The Divide caused by the package you brought, but it just doesn't work. It's far more abstract than the marked men, and the tunnelers are an annoying enemy, due to the fact that they tend to show up in huge mobs.
I'm going to say this now and get it out of the way: mutated creatures and abominations are the worst part of Fallout. Humans (and by extension, ghouls and super mutants) are the enemies I actually want to be fighting. Robots are fine, too. I'm most engaged when I'm acting as a hero of indiscriminate justice, and you can't bring an animal to justice.

Another problem with the expansion's theming is that Ulysses's dialogue checks your faction reputation, rather than your quest progress. Since I've done all the side quests pro-NCR, they love me. However, I locked myself out of their ending by siding with Mr. House. Instead of triggering the House dialogue, the game uses the NCR dialogue. (this also applies to the duster you get for beating the expansion)
Faction reputation simply fails to work in this scenario in any event. There are so many side quests in the game that can increase your NCR fame. There are maybe four quests to increase your Strip reputation. You can give vault suits to the woman at Vault 21, but now we're getting into the Fallout 3 trap where giving 20 bottles of water to a beggar completely offsets the fact that you nuked an entire town.
So, to sum it up, Ulysses keeps talking like I'm going to take the dam for the NCR when, in actuality, I am going to take the dam for Mr. House, and force the NCR to vacate.

This expansion has cool new weapons and a good premise. The beginning at Hopeville is a great area; one of the best in the game. The additions to ED-E's story are good, and the way Ulysses is tied to not only the main game, but also the other three expansions, works very well.
Unfortunately, the way Ulysses recognises your faction, and the sections with the tunnelers shoot the themes they tried to build up in the foot. The trip through The Divide is one that I'm glad I took, but also one that I have no desire to take again.

For being the final DLC to release, this is pretty disappointing. Its pretty linear, has you going down a single path to reach a point and confront another generic villain. The journey there is filled with hordes of powerful enemies, including some bullshit area where they throw in multiple Deathclaws. Now Deathclaws in normal New Vegas aren't too bad and can be handled but I swear in this DLC they are buffed, I was on super easy due to the DLC freezing up like crazy and wanting to just rush through it, and the Deathclaws would kill my level 50 character in 3 or 4 hits at full health. Plus my most powerful guns took at least 10-15 shots to kill them, this is on super easy mode, meaning this DLC basically just throws a buttload of difficult shit at you because that's the only way the DLC can claim any value. The DLC itself is still pretty short and can be beaten in under 5 hours and the story itself isn't too great either, like most Fallout DLC its side shit that doesn't really matter or impact that main story. Its cool having Ed-E as a companion for this, but I didn't find it to add a whole lot, and it played like a generic and forgettable DLC, and there were too many difficult and frustrating moments in this DLC to make it enjoyable for me.
