F1 2012 I don't follow Formula 1, but I do have an interest in racing games. I recently played F1 2011, so didn't take too long to adapt to F1 2012. You get the usual assist options like ABS, Traction Control, Racing Line, Rewinds and Autobrake. I was impressed with the amount of customisation you can do with the difficulty etc to give you the experience according to your interest in the sport.
Tutorial gives you an intro into racing lines, KERS, DRS. It doesn't explain the rules though. I got busted for illegal overtaking and disqualified in my first race. Strangely, I didn't encounter that flag for a long time after that (I must have been slightly cheeky and cut a corner). The “Caused a collision” penalty was a more frequent occurrence for me, and I found this to be quite infuriating. I understood you couldn't just ram opponents, but sometimes I was minding my own business and they would hit me as I turned the corner; yet I would incur the 10 second penalty. Another example is when an opponent decided to give my wheels a clip on a straight which caused me to spin out; he seemed to avoid the flag.
I was annoyed at the Rewinds were limited to 5, since it is easy for mistakes to be made, or have a bit of bad luck when near other drivers. If you are racing over 10+ laps, you will end up losing a massive amount of time because of the limited rewinds.
In F1 2012, there's a new mode which is like a short (10 races) one-season mode. There's still a Career mode though, but this new mode is a short and streamlined version. There's no Practice round and the Qualifying round is only one lap. You get to pick a rival, it's best out of 3 then you can join their team if you win, and that process repeats 3 times.
Time Trial and Time Attack modes. One mode has a limited set of challenges but they are the same thing really; try and beat a target time without driving off course.
On the previous installment, I frequently encountered random stuttering, and experienced an occasional crash. I still noticed some stuttering when racing against the AI (Time Trial seemed to perform fine). The game only crashed once.
I think your enjoyment of F1 2012 depends very much on how much you like the sport. It's a well made game, and I think most of the annoyances I have are with the sport itself, rather than the game.
