F1 Race is an early racing game for the Famicom/NES.
For such an early game on the system, this is very solid and well polished. The car handling is very good and as such, you very much feel in control. Although the game isn't much to write home about in the sound departement, the graphics are great for a 1984 console game. The pseudo-3D effect is pretty good and smooth and the sprites are nice to look at. Gameplay-wise, it's simple yet good. It runs at a very good framerate. There are 3 sets of tracks (skill levels) to choose from, the level design is good and the game is a decent challenge of simple arcade racing fun, though it might get a bit repetitive. The most impressive part is how this all fits in a small 24 KB ROM cartridge by only using the NES' NROM Mapper (Mapper 0). HAL did a pretty good job on this fun little game.

A proof of Nintendo's(well, HAL's) talent to make their games round and functional, understanding the importance of responsive and fair controls. There have been many Pole Position clones for the home consoles in the years since it came out but this is the only one that does the original any justice. Know how to control your breaks so you could skilfully overtake other racers.
