Eversion is an alright game, there's just a not a lot of meat on it. The horror elements aren't quite uncanny enough to really leave much an impact. I really love this developer though -- there was an old Verge2 Engine game called Zeux's World (later re-released as Zeta's World) that has very similar mechanics to this game. But Zeux's World was a lot more complete, mysterious, and un-pretentious. A micro-opus of sorts.

Eversion has a pretty amusing gimmick that might have been spoiled by a few years of the trend of "secretly a horror game" game gimmick. It's a bit neat to see how the characters change bit by bit when you "EVERT" into different dimensions of the levels, but kind of like later Zelda titles like The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, the "dark world" versions of levels isn't that different from the other world. I understand it's supposed to be a gradual change but eh.
Hitboxes seem really sensitive and jumping occasionally feels not like you are in control. But this is such a short game, you can beat it, even with its secret ending (some of those last gems are not intuitive to get, and as I overworked my way to get them, I soft-locked the game). Without some mild "you are stuck and now need to restart/die and lose the progress you had set up".
Outside that it's an alright quickie game that still goes beyond just being a platformer, but in comparison to other retro-styled platformers that would come in the next 5 years from indie devs, even one-person teams, there is more out there.

Eversion may have been an unusual subversion of Mario-esq platformers at release but simply feels too generic and bland to actually be worth playing. The lovecraftian/horror bent of the game isn't intense enough to carry the idea through effectively..

I'm not crazy about this game, but this is hardly "full-on edge-lord" or thinks it's twist is the wildest most revolutionary thing in the world, it plays it far more like it's a cute joke than anything else.
the game could have been much better if the horror aspects were explored in more depth. in the end there's just not a lot going for it. the multiple endings are cool and memorable though.
