Can't complain too much because the moments that hit really hit but I wish the narrative was stronger because a lot of the time the overarching story is just not there. The game feels like it's trying to juggle the satirical silly stuff with a meta semi-self aware narrative with a bittersweet coming of age story of 4 kids surmounting the odds and saving the world from this inter-dimensional cosmic threat.
Also I wish the characters had more depth than the occasional box of text, I legit don't even think there's a moment where Ness, Paula, Jeff and Poo have a conversation with one another
Earthbound is not as much about the story as other JRPGs, it's like an episodic sunday morning cartoon. Mother3 is way more focused on storytelling so you'll probably like it more
yeah i like this game specifically because it's so abstract and simple in its story and lets other elements take precedence. mother 3 is way more story focused and, while i do like that game, i don't like it as much as this one.
i've always really liked this game, but you honestly do sum up my biggest gripe with it; it can't decide how much to juggle between the JRPG postmodern satire and the more humble, earnest coming-of-age narrative. as a result it has a weaker narrative and characters than either its predecessor and successor. in that sense it's v much the odd one out of the series.
i mean i think it's fine if your plot is abstract, but the chosen 4 really falter in terms of personality and moments compared to 1's cast (including supplementary materials that 2 doesn't have) and 3's more potent characters
The story in this game is excellent. But it's not necessarily meant to be a deep character drama. The characters are still good, but the best parts of the story occur when the simple, childlike characters are pitted against the surreal, whimsical, messed up world that they inhabit
I'll give it a go eventually, I wanted to play the famous fan-translation on my snes mini but I couldn't get it to work - maybe later next year since playing Earthbound took around 2 and a bit months
