Following the events of Doom, the nameless hero returns to Earth only to find it ravaged by the army of Hell. And if that wasn't enough... they've killed his pet rabbit. Bad move, demons - now he's not just fighting to save the planet, but for a personal vendetta too.
Da Vinci might have been a genius, but he didn't think of giving the Mona Lisa a double shotgun to fight archviles in the sequel.

I really prefer Doom 1 over Doom 2 for a couple of reason. Here's a simple explanation for Doom 2:
Pros:
-Super Shotgun -Most new enemy types are fun -The final boss is pretty cool
Cons:
-Some of the levels are very bad and in general I prefer the level design in Doom 1 -Archviles and chaingunners can go to hell
To me the game is almost just an expansion pack that doesn't significantly improve over the first game. It's still a great game though.

I honestly don't understand why people prefer Doom's level design, I'd call it a claustrophobic mess. Doom II upped the ante by delivering more enemies, more variety, and larger areas to explore. I found the maps more straightforward and enemies more thoughtfully placed. It's significantly more challenging and less annoying to traverse as a result. Only problem is, the keys make a return and they're just as frustrating to deal with as the first game. All they ever did was slow down the game, this is supposed to be a fast-paced shooter.

I know I'm far from the first person to make this observation, however I feel this is less of a sequel to the original doom and more of an expansion pack that happens to be twice as long as everything that has to offer combined. This is due to how repetitive this game feels as well as how little it has to offer compared to its sequels.
Now of course that doesn't mean this is a terrible game, far from it as everything the first game has to offer is accounted for here, it's just that I do dock points for games that lack innovation which this one certainly does. That said it does a good job in expanding the mechanics and cast of monsters as we have the likes of the revenant, mancubus and arachnatron joining the cast of bad guys for us to kill. We also have the mighty super shotgun to give us extra firepower to defeating these enemies as well as the soul sphere which gives us maximum health and armour when picked up. The real meat on the bone here is that we have a continuous campaign rather than it being divided up into three campaigns that reset our inventory upon starting a new chapter, this is because the game wasn't first released through shareware and was instead sold through retail making it a complete product upon its initial release as opposed to other Id software games from the 90s. This is what I mean when I say this is more of an expansion pack than a full game as nothing I've said about this game makes it a unique experience from its predecessor. It's still a classic, just one that is a disappointment when you realise it’s a sequel rather than bonus content.
It's a must play experience for sure, just don't be surprised of the lack of innovation on display.

Actually not as good level design wise compared to Doom 1, but it wins back those lost points by the addition of the Super Shotgun alone. The closest thing to match the feeling of an orgasm ever created.

As a sequel to one of the most legendary games ever made, Doom II is a bit disappointing. It's more of an expansion than a new game, and the additions here consist of 30 new levels, a handful of new enemies, and one new weapon. The new enemies are good additions, and the additional weapon is iconic (hello double barrelled shotgun), but the new levels are an extremely mixed bag. This game was rushed out and it shows. Some of the levels are good, but compared to the original Doom there's a lot less visual variety and the sprawling maps can feel like quite a slog, leading to a game that I can't quite recommend on its own merits.
However, when thought of as a platform rather than a singular game, Doom II is as legendary as the original. There's a huge mod community even 30 years later, and the sheer timeless strength of the core mechanics (mostly carried over from Doom 1, let it be said) mean that developers are still wringing cutting edge ideas out of it, generally without adding or changing enemies or weapons. The mechanics are just that solid.
My recommendation is that you play Doom II until you get bored, then grab the Final Doom expansion and play through Plutonia Experiment, which is much more solid set of levels than those contained in the original release. Then, if you still want more, head to internet and download some of the many incredibly well-designed user maps.

Sandy petersens level design is trash in Doom 2. The pit, barrels of fun, and tricks and traps are some of the most infamous examples of atrocious level design I can find. At least it has the double barreled shotgun and new enemies because most of the maps are terribly tedious and frustrating to play even after beating it on UV multiple times
Going through the modern megawads for this game, and some of them are much more intuitive and fun than vanilla. 'Back to Saturn' and 'Going Down' are big standouts, so far.
The ashes Games fucking rule, the first one is a more straightforward Doom wad with a little bit more story than usual, the 2nd one feels like someone tried to make a simplified fallout game on the build engine (despite being a doom engine game)
