A solid effort at bringing the series to 3D, even if it does feel a lot like playing a less-good version of Banjo-Kazooie most of the time. The game has tons of classic Rareware character and humour, the visual design is impressive and the controls feel great as long as you're not attempting to swing on vines. As enjoyable as the game is to play and the world is to explore, the repetition and backtracking introduced by the excessive gating of areas and character-specific collectables was a big mistake.

the "oh banana" sample immediately qualifies this as a 4/5

Was the bomb at the time, but coming back to it I realize that it was too much collectathon. There's just way too much crap that needs collecting. Back tracking to previous areas to collect coloured bananas becomes a pain in the bum more than anything

if you are trying to get everything you are going to have a miserable time. just skip anything that's not fun to do and I promise you'll still rack up enough bananas to beat the game.
Retrospective slander for this game is kinda crazy, but clearly something I read often elsewhere. Shit received acclaim back then (still has a 90/100) on Metacritic, I have amazing memories playing but I'm curious and scared to try it again someday. I remember never finishing it as a kid (but probably close), the whole "three billions things to tediously collect" has to be true.
I feel like this game could really benefit from a remake. The content and gameplay is fine, but it feels like it just tried to do too much than was actually possible on the N64. It’s frustrating how glitchy it is and how slow the game runs at times
Maximalism at its finest. Bigger doesn't always mean better but it does here IMO. I hear much about the sheer amount of collectibles in this game so going back to it I was shocked how sensibly placed all the bananas and coins were, I expected it to be much more tedious than it was. Perhaps if you're trying to reach maximum completion it can be a pain keeping track of EVERYTHING, but if you're just playing to complete it, it's a blast. I just beat it for the first time in like 20 years, 105 bananas 54% completion 11 hours 11 minutes. There's some bad controls/platforming and terrible 2d sprites as collectibes with tiny hitboxes, but I don't have any other complaints. The kongs all felt unique and distinguished and the world/environment made great use of their abilities. The bosses are very memorable and intimidating even if they aren't terribly difficult. Also love how a barrier of entry to even reach the final boss is to complete 2 retro arcade games, that is brutal and hilarious and bold all at the same time. (Many people stop here altogether, unable to get the rare/nintendo coins, and grow up never beating the game.) Banjo Tooie may take the 3d platformer crown in my opinion but I still think DK64 is a masterpiece in its own right.
