Devotion recounts the story of a man named Du Feng Yu, who lives with his daughter Mei Shin and wife Li Fang, a former actress who abandons her career to raise her family. As he explores vignettes related to his past, Du witnesses his daughter's mental deterioration caused by his troubled relationship with his wife and the pressure from his dead-end job as a screenwriter. Driven to madness, the family becomes involved in sinister supernatural elements.
Devotion is a 3 hour horror walking simulation, that through the use of heavy symbolism tells a tale of the horrors a family can go through. There is a lot of taiwanese culture within this game, right from the way the characters react to certain situations, as well as the ever looming religious beliefs.
Gameplay is rather simple for the most part, which including walking through hallways and grabbing objects in the environment to use in very simple puzzles. There is no fail state except in one sequence, and for that reason it really feels closer to a walking sim.
One thing that i really dislike about it is the high frequency of jump scares in the first half. These end up just being annoying to me, even more because the game is in first person its much easier to get startled. There are a lot of these that could be considered cliches, like pocessed dolls and creepy little girls jumping into the camera. The second half is much less horror focused, as you understand the mystery behind the game and the unfolding of the story.
I got more out of Detention than this one. The sudden jumpscares really made me annoyed, and the puzzles are really all too easy. The best part of it is the actual story, symbolism, and how it portrays taiwanese culture.

I liked this a ton more by playing it for a second time with a group of people who don't play videogames. They were all like, "I can't believe there are games like this!!!"
Absolutely confident this would've quickly ascended into the echelon of horror masterpieces if its launch wasn't tarnished by the Steam x CCP controversy. It's a genuine shame this game didn't get the wider recognition it was on track to receive.
Just beautiful and very emotional. Wish they had amped up the scariness while being subtle about it. Anyhow, some of the best psychological horror in recent years.
