You get different experiences out of them despite their immersive sim commonality. If you're interested in the stealth-oriented aspect of these games Thief/Dishonored are a no brainer. If you want an extremely compelling story that paved the way for the mechanics found in Bioshock then play System Shock.
But if you want a "jack of all trades" type game and don't mind jank Deus Ex is the game for you
think it’s a great game and some interesting things to say philosophically but parts of it they definitely got wrong. Like the philosophy around China and their attitude towards Hong Kong and that it’s just propaganda that China will try and influence Hong Kong definitely looks a bit dated now.
Also think it’s overly anti-globalisation, even though there’s plenty of legit concerns with globalisation I feel most of the concerns are against capitalist globalisation, rather than globalisation Itself which doesn’t have to be inherently capitalist - think globalisation is kind of essential and necessary in the modern world if you want to solve the inevitabilities of mass migration after climate change makes many parts of the world unliveable..
Also think for example the idea that we should be outraged about the EU trying to integrate Europe into one federalised state and care about losing our different cultures languages and ideals when most “unique” European culture is stolen, plundered and formed through years of xenophobia and brutal pointless ethnic or sectarian wars between neighbour states is a bit right-wing nationalist populism, feels like some of the stuff you hear from Swedish Democrats and Brexiteers these days. Think European integration has largely been successful within only 1 generation since 1992, Already the idea of France, England, Austria and Germany/Prussia all in perpetual wars with each other feel like ancient history . I’m all in for a United States of Europe tbh.
I've started about 3 different playthroughs of this but my ADHD worm-infested decomposing brain has stopped me dead in my tracks every time. I need to finish this. I'm determined.
