A fun and simple experience, great way to spend some leisure time with a controller. Sadly, the game becomes stale quite soon, there is not a lot of diversity in maps, or the type of challenges you get to do.

A decently fun biking game - I really like how the points you acquire for doing tricks go to an overall total. Nothing to write home about, but I really enjoyed it, especially when you are doing well. Good overall, very solid. Physics can be wonky sometimes.

Describing a game centered around downhill mountain biking in which you ride down randomly generated trails in the same few environments has the potential to sound like a mildly interesting mobile game, but RageSquid have managed to make it into a compelling PC game that I don't feel bad about paying $25 for.
If you're going to make a simple game, you have to make your game's "hook" world-class. It's not enough to make it addicting, unless you want people to hate your game the entire time they're playing. Descenders may not have the most complicated gameplay, but it's incredibly satisfying. The bike physics are believable and the controls are intuitive, making the experience feel like playing an instrument rather than controlling a character.
Given how simple it is, of course it's the little things that really make the experience worth it. The soundtrack that manages to be both relaxing and upbeat (and streamers don't have to worry about copyright issues!), the sounds your bike makes as you carve a turn just right, the little upgrades you accrue as the game goes on. The game has elements that draw from roguelites, as well -- you'll get better with practice, of course, but you can also unlock upgrades that persist throughout the run that reset when starting a new one. Crew members might help you stick tough landings, jump higher, or even smooth out the paths for you. It's a neat way to add progression to the game without reducing the amount of skill required from the player.
I think my biggest issue with Descenders is the price tag. It's not a price I regret paying, but with multiplayer coming out -- uh, today -- it's going to be a bit hard to convince people who aren't into sports games that this is worth it. The experience is incredibly satisfying, but it's hard to make people understand without getting them a controller in their hands.
In summary, Descenders is quickly becoming one of my favorite games. It's not a big time commitment, so you can play it to waste 5 minutes or you can play it in a giant marathon session. It's not a complicated game -- a fact that may worry some given the pricing -- but they found their core gameplay loop and polished the hell out of it until it's the best in the genre.
Disclaimer: At the time of this writing, the game is still in early access, and will be for another 24 hours. I suppose that makes this an odd time to write a review. I'll certainly revisit this review tomorrow once the 1.0 update drops, but I feel comfortable reviewing this now because the game is obviously mostly complete and I don't see what they could add to the game in a 1.0 release that would make me drop my score or give it a perfect 10.

really really fun stuff, expected it to be janky and boring at first impression but picked it up cuz friends were playing and put 13 hours into it across two days.
