Back into the grim
I have beat Dark Souls 3 back when it launched in 2016, but only tackled the two DLCs in 2022, and I will say that both add a lot into making the game more complete. While the main game is mechanically excellent, it has just way too many throwbacks to past Souls game, almost feeling like a AAA fangame at times. The two DLCs add a lot of very creative new areas, bosses and mechanics, so much so that they elevate the main game.

Ringed City is the biggest out of the two expansions. While Ashes of Ariandel features uniquely snow areas, there is a large variety of locals to explored in Ringed City, right from decrepid city ruins, dungeons inhabited by skelly bois, and of course swamps. The level design is excellent, with obvious clear solutions in mind to tackle them, but allowing different builds to pass through. The atmosphere is grim and comparable to some of Dark Souls I worst places, like Blightown.

Bosses are a big highlight in this DLC, featuring coupled bosses that actually feel enjoyable to beat, a refreshing take on a Demon's Souls boss (with much improved mechanics), and a true epic final boss against an armored knight that shows how great that concept can be with proper boss design (looking at you, Dark Souls II). Oh and there is a dragon, which shows that From Software still has trouble in designing big boss fights, but fortunatly its optional.

While in my mind Dark Souls 3 was a bit of a letdown back when it originally launched, this pair of DLCs does a lot of reinstated it as a top tier action RPG.

Great Conclusion
Such an amazing conclusion to Dark Souls. Gael and Demon Prince are incredible bosses. The level design is a lot bette than Ashes of Ariendel, and the visuals are stunning. How the story concludes after you fight Gael, one of the best bosses in all of Souls, is simply breathtaking.

The Ringed City

this is the final conclusion to the souls saga. this is the last piece of content to be released ever, apparently. breath taking visuals, a big destroyed city floating in the sky almost. it has challenging archer parts which require good timing and patience. interesting architecture, cryptic new npc's and places to discover. the new ringed enemies are challenging and fun, with massive blades and dexterous movesets.

there is even a ornstein fight in the water, its unnamed and tucked away in a corner but its clearly ornstein clone. you get dragonslayer armor for killing him, its a really cool addition. the new armor and equipment is awesome and fun to acquire.

there is an optional boss Darkeater Midir which is one of the hardest souls bosses to date! this guy took me hours to try to beat, god damn difficult but I guess it paid off. the feeling of accomplishment overcoming so difficult. hes slightly bullshit in his 1 hit kills, but it was fun to try to learn.

other bosses, demon in pain demon from below was another tag team fight, slightly generic, medium difficult. decent fight overall. Halflight spear of the church is a pretty worthless fight. its like the online invasion gimmick from demons souls, yet another NPC human fight. feels pointless and easy to cheese.

then is the final area of the souls franchise, a big barren desert with nothing in it but a crawling soul warning you of whats to come, then you find the last boss Slave knight gael. this fight is awesome and one of the best of the series. he does crazy ariel acrobatics, jumps around and has a very unique moveset. hes not too tricky to figure out, but the fun is one of the most fun of the game.

and then the game ends after that, with no cutscene, no end credits. just nothingness. intentionally to leave you with a wondering of purpose and meaning of the game's message. you deliver an item to a child infront of a painting and a little cutscene plays nudging you to question the meaning of it all. a very poignant last message.

8/10

Title
Ringed City is supposedly the end of Dark Souls. After this DLC the creator said he was done working on Dark Souls and he would be ending the series to focus on other projects. Dark Souls III released over 2 years ago now and despite it not being my favorite, it did manage to have the Souls feel and gave us some decent bosses. After the first DLC released, which was a disappointment, this came not long after and was mostly praised as being a good sendoff and actually being a full DLC. Ringed City plays out similar to a lot of other Souls game DLCs, you have about 2 or so main areas, and then 3-4 bosses and new enemies/weapons. The first area is a city in ashes where you fall down cliffs, the other area is a swamp. Its not the most original, but it does its job and I found the areas not to be too bad. The area with the Angels was pretty chaotic but it never felt terribly cheap once you knew how to take them out.

The bosses are really the selling point of the DLC much like Bloodborne's and to be honest the bosses are a mixed bag. There are 4 bosses in this and 3 of them provide a good challenge. The problem is that 2 of the bosses in this DLC are a bit too aggressive. Now I complained about the last DLC how Friede was too aggressive for a strength build, while there is a boss in this called Gael who has 3 phases and he just ends up getting too aggressive and almost gives you no room to attack as a strength build with a big weapon. The other is a dragon who also is aggressive and the only way to really do adequate damage is to hit its head, but a majority of the fight you have to battle the camera and its hard to tell where the dragon is going to attack, especially if you run underneath it. Its mostly a frustrating fight because of that rather than the enemy being difficult. Gael was a mixed bag, I ended up summoning for him due to the fact that my build just wasn't cutting it, and the fight was really tense. We ended up getting Gael to around 5% health where he had about 4 or 5 hits until he died, then the guy I summoned died and I only had like 1 estus left, and I just ran in dodged like a madman, and ended up using my last estus and still having 3 or 4 hits to kill him so I just dodged close to him got a few lucky hits and he managed to get me to the point where I would be dead in one hit or combo and he had just a sliver of health and I was out of stamina so I was spamming the attack button like crazy and managed to get in a hit before him and win. It was probably the most tense fight I've ever had in a Souls game. The other 2 bosses are the easier ones. You have one where you fight 2 giant demons who then transform into a flaming bat, and the other is a summon boss who I ended up not getting a summon for so it was a cakewalk.

Overall, this DLC isn't bad, the bosses in this are probably easily the most challenging in all the Souls games and that includes both the Dark Souls 1 and Bloodborne DLC. But for the most part the challenge comes from the aggression of the bosses and the camera for one of them. The DLC is a lot better than the previous but I still feel it wasn't as good as the core game of Dark Souls 3. The design of the areas was okay, but felt a tad generic and none of the new enemies really stood out aside from the flame knights. Its cool that it tied into Dark Souls II and I did find the bosses to be decent enough, but they have enough flaws where I can't quite say they are my favorite in the series, and going into this as a strength build made me feel a bit disadvantaged.

Title
A notable step up from Ariandel, this DLC picks up right where the last DLC leaves off. If you remember in Ashes; after you defeated Sister Friede the young painter girl begins painting a world of her own, she spoke of her uncle Gael who's set out to the world's end to find a pigment for her painting which requires thee "Dark Soul". So basically you travel to the end of the earth and thus the famed Ringed City where you wanna figure out what's going on. There's much more to the story here involving Ringed Knights, a giant slumbering lady, and a new faction called the Spears of the Church; but I'll let you wrestle those details out yourselves. Overall I was digging the narrative, setting, and premises. The land you travel to is - I think - the same place you briefly visit at the end of DS3's main story, what makes it special is how it collects lore and imagery from the previous Dark Souls games and throws them all into one environment. The Dreg Heap is just a bunch of kingdoms that look like they were mashed up in a blender and it's visually spectacular, the famed Ringed City is also a marvellous sight to behold.

The trouble here is that of this giant Ringed City; you only have access to a street... A small street... Like it's a pretty small explorable area. There are surrounding locations to explore like swamps and cave(s) but they're not as appealing tbh... I did like the whole dropping down theme of the first area, but you really gotta rely on online messages to discern where you can and can't drop down. The enemies you encounter here in the ringed city - many of which feel like re-skins of in-game foes - are all pretty vicious. The two main additions to the enemy roster are these flying angel ladies that shower you with bullets, and giant creepy looking guys called adjudicators who summon armies of phantoms to swarm you. I like the angels on paper but they make the first area of the DLC an absolute nightmare; try navigating a poisonous swamp inhabited by aggressive foes while two of these ladies rain bullets down on top of you... The first encounter with an adjudicator is quite epic I won't lie, they're certainly the most interesting foes within the Ringed City.

The bosses in this DLC are generally good. I wasn't a big fan of the first two since they're blatantly unfair fights, but the second has a unique twist to it that I think Dark Souls veterans will really like. The final boss is terrific and very intense, I think folks will be satisfied there. Lastly the forth optional boss is quite interesting as well, I took it as an apology for the lacklustre battle with the Ancient Wyvern over in Arch Dragon's Peak. There's also a returning in-game boss that shows up randomly in a most unflattering area and I felt that he was hamfisted in and really had no business being there!!!... Weapons! This DLC pack has a pretty solid assortment of weapons/spells for Dex and Pyromancy builds (which is odd because I can't see pyromancers fairing well in this DLC at all...), there's also some sick shields like a giant door and a dragon's head that spits fire!

I've got beef with just how ruthlessly this DLC was designed at times since it got stupid hard even by Dark Souls standards. I appreciate the intent to challenge the player especially since this is "the final mission" so to speak, but still I can't help but feel like they over did it just a tad. And like I'd mentioned earlier I wished that some of these areas (namely the Ringed City) were more expansive and fleshed out... I also have to say that even despite the last boss being so freaking good, this DLC ends pretty weak; like this is supposedly the end of all Dark Souls and there really wasn't much thought of any kind put into a proper ending. All that said this is still a solid DLC pack for 15 bucks, if you've played through Dark Souls III's main game then I'd say you owe it to yourself to experience this gruelling side quest.

not gonna lie, i thought midir was pretty underwhelming given the hype of how hard he's supposed to be and the variety of moves he has. i was expecting something more along the lines of how gael's fight turned out; not just big damage and a big health bar but also lots of varying moves etc.

i'm sorry but the level design here is just bad to me. enemies are way too tanky and there's just so goddamn many of them. it does have two of the undisputed best bosses in the series (Gael + Midir), but outside of that the admittedly pretty outstanding visuals of the Ringed City itself, and how impactful it feels as the end of the trilogy, this one has always felt a bit poorer to me than the other FromSoft DLCs. were it not for the aforementioned two bosses, i'd probably prefer Ariandel over it

Sounds like a skill issue. I've never had an issue fighting through the enemies.

What an absolute joy this is. You two of what I would consider some of the best bosses in the series, amazing areas and visuals, and then to top it of, you get THE best boss in the series. I'm so happy Dark Souls exists

The final scene with Patches is no joke, my favorite story beat in any of the Soulsborne games

Fuck me, I love that little weasel so much, I hope he sticks around in these games forever
