Imagine if the schoolyard set-up of Pokemon was stretched out to a full linear narrative, but in return you had some form of actual emotional investment and payoff that reflected the world therein, and a far more varied combat system to offset the highly systematic pace. Custom Robo Arena legitimately surprised me with how well it worked as a teen-rated extension of the monster catching series, which improves on the setting and themes just enough for me to actually take it seriously, even amongst scenarios of pure cheese.
