A lot of retro shooters coming out these days, most of which taking influence from doom, but it would only be a matter of time before the blueprint of Blood was revisited. Honestly i could never get too much into the original Blood, its a genuinely hard game with plenty of annoying hit scanning enemies. Cultic takes the horror like atmosphere and dynamite of Blood, features a very similar graphical style, but improved on the concept massively. There is way more environment interactivity, with the ability to slide around and pick up objects in the environment.
Chapter 1 features 10 levels, 1 of which is a horde mode and another a boss level. Each level has genuinenly great level design, they are linear for the most part but you will unlock the level through the use of keys or simple puzzles in a very satisfying way. Plenty of diversity of locations and combat encounters, which can range from open areas to very tight corridors.
Enemy diversity is great, giving reasons to use the whole rooster of very satisfying weaponry. With headshots enemies die quick, and i woudlnt call any of them annoying to battle. Its a good challenging game without ever feeling frustrating. It has gun wielding enemies but these dont have hitscanning weapons, as it is possible to dodge out of the way of the bullets by predicting and sidestepping.
The weapons are incredible satisfying to use, both due to the feel and gore system. Its got way more weapons than i would have imagined for such a tightly designed game, since many of these retro shooters dont go beyond 5 weapons. All weapons are useful until the end of the campaign, partially because ammo is hard to come by. That ties in well with the horror theme of the game, making ammo conservation and tight accuracy essencial. The game has a slowdown effect occasionally when you perform a headshot or kill multiple enemies with an explosion, thats just the cherry on top of the cake and makes the game feel that much more enjoyable.
You can feel the huge amount of passion he has poured into the project, through the tightness of the design, personality and few easter eggs. Really had a lot of fun blasting through these levels, and if he can keep up the quality for future chapters than this will be amongst the best FPS of this decade for sure.
