Rumors had been spreading about a cemetery where dead things move. Against the advice of the clan elders, a young woman named Cadence sets off to investigate.
I don't think it'd be fair for me to give it a full-on rating, but I can see why it'd be a love-it or hate-it kind of game. Either the rhythm element is something you're right on board with and it feels great, or it's just not something that clicks, as many rhythm games unfortunately seem not to for me, and it feels like the game's controls are actively working against you - because they kinda are.
While I don't mind dying in a roguelike, I ended up putting this game down pretty quick, as it never feels good for it to feel like you're actively fighting against the controls.

This is a combo that works surpisingly well, though I was expecting the rhythm aspect to be a bit more fleshed out. It's also just too luck-based and random to be truly great and ditches most of its systems if you play the all zones mode, which ends up being a huge leap in difficulty (and would be a big one even if it let you keep the permanent upgrades which is a few extra HP, a higher default gold multiplier and the appearance of certain chests during a run). To me a better version of all zones mode would let me do corpse runs and/or use the diamond dealer (who sells three random items for diamonds collected in the previous run). Easy mode should've also covered all zones and let you save in-between zones. This instead of an alternate character that simply removes the rhythm aspect of the game, which I don't see the point in doing.
As an example of the randomness at play, you can either not find any of the good weapons or spells for an entire zone and not find the shop in some levels before time runs out, OR you can find an upgraded ranged weapon, a life leeching crown and a healing spell and revival potion which lets you easily make it to the boss. The former is more likely however, and there is also no way to go back to a previous floor during a run, not even with some added penalty like tougher enemies or some health lost.
Alternatively, you can be doing great for a couple of floors but then you open a room with several mini-bosses, get confused by a mage, bump into a trap that bounces you where you didn't want to go and then get cornered to death in a couple of seconds wondering what just happened. In other words, there are moments where the RL elements don't quite gel with the rhythm aspect as most simply won't have the multitasking skills to deal with 3+ pursuing enemies and various traps at the same time. With the default character this is generally OK, as pausing and losing the beat just drops a multiplier that generally just affects gold drops and can be raised fairly quickly, but with others you take damage from this as well. Looking at the steam stats, less than 9% finished the last zone of the game, and that's not even the end of the game's story, rather it ends on a cliffhanger and asks you to beat it two more times, once with a character that dies in one hit.
Furthermore, on PC (Windows 10) there is a weird bug that makes me wait 20+ seconds each time I boot up the game or it'll crash on the loading screen. Controller support is also half-assed, causing double inputs if you use joytokey and not letting you map anything to confirm/enter if you don't.
On the plus side, variety is quite good, the visuals are charming and the music is excellent. Each zone has a new set of enemies and traps, as well as hidden rooms and chests to dig out. I was also surprised by the great final bosses, which are pretty creative and really intense. Most of the other bosses are kind of easy (I had more trouble with some of the mini-bosses), besides king conga which is also the only one that messes around with time signatures (it uses a track where neither you nor the enemies can move on the 8th beat and the music communicates this well with drumless fills at the end of each measure). But they do all stand out in terms of theming.
Do I recommend the game for the average player? I really want to, but no, I can only do so provided you are really good at both genres that it pulls from and don't mind any of the negatives I already pointed out. If you are happy with just playing (part of) the main game (one zone at a time) and looking up the rest of the story online, I would say go for it.

I've played 60+ hours of this since it was released. It has its flaws. Sometimes the player gets overwhelmed in a corner on later levels because they missed 1-2 beats. Yes, the game gets punishing if you can't keep in-tempo with the music, but the soundtrack (and all of the remixes of it within the game) is dope.

Fun game with a super unique idea, I'm just not dedicated/good/interested enough to learn all the enemies past the first level.
