When I got back into this game, I started having nightmares about it. Not just when I was asleep - as I was drifting off, I had hallucinations of that slightly-hunched Yuri clone creeping around. I don't think any other game has done this to me. It's a stressful game, I guess. And yet, the solution to my psychosis was to keep playing the game. Command, then conquer.
The Yuri's Revenge expansion pack is known for improved multiplayer and a poorly designed campaign. The campaign mode levels start off fun, but once you've figured out Yuri's attacks, it's a slog to destroy his base. Prism tanks are OP and everything else is pretty much useless. Skirmish mode vs A.I. has similar problems - the A.I. is even dumber than in the campaign. It builds up a strong defense and barely attacks. Only interesting if you play against as many brutal AI as you can handle.
Human vs human is where Yuri's Revenge really shines. (I'm too shit to play against other people, but I like watching it on Youtube.) Regular tanks become essential if you want to attack early - something you can't really do in campaign mode. Some maps force players to rely heavily on air or navy. IMO the most entertaining map is the custom map that's extremely small. It's the only time I've seen somebody win a game solely because of Boris. Another custom map I'd like to play is "Who will conquer the island?" The maps that come with the game are okay, but there are too many for 2-4 players and not enough for 6-8.
The lack of a Yuri campaign is a tragedy, but at least the original game's Soviet campaign has one or two levels centered around mind-control strategies.
My favorite building in this game is the grinder. You can 1v7 brutal A.I. on any map by grinding mind-controlled enemies for cash. The only problem is it 's hard to play offense as Yuri, especially because boomers make the game crash. :)
