Before there was Breakout, there was Clean Sweep. Instead of hitting bricks with the ball, you collect pellets with it. This difference matters more than my terse description suggests, since it restricts the ball to bouncing off the walls and the paddle.
The designers did add several wrinkles, including randomized speeds after the ball hits the paddle. and a curved paddle that gives a visual cue for the bounce angle. However, the ball trajectories are sufficiently limited that clearing the board becomes harder than it looks like it ought to be.
I still like this game layout, and collecting the pellets is surprisingly cathartic. It is completely overshadowed by the subsequent success of Breakout, but Ramtek's game still holds water.
