For some reason I keep hearing how this is the successor to Simcity. I wonder if those people ever understood the point of Simcity. Simcity is a ...city simulation game. The game simulates the economy, development, work, daily life, traffic of the sims in the city. It does this all rather well.
On the other hand, the simulation in Cities Skylines is an afterthought. This game is a city builder, not a simulator. The one thing that it simulates reasonably well is traffic. That is it. Even that is limited by the engine like sims not following normal schedules for time and day. The economy is not responsive. Education doesn't really matter. High tech vs low tech industry. Demand. Etc etc.
I don't knock the development team for going for the shallow route. The success of this game clearly shows that people are more interested in a city painter than an in depth simulation. But I am not.

+ Impressive selection of buildings. + Fits very diverse playstyles. + Offers great replayability with many unique buildings or challenges, some of which cannot really be combined together. + Very large modding community that can improve and expand the game in meaningful ways. - Sadly everything above is only applicable if you are willing to churn out a ton of money to get all the DLCs - without them, it is a good but somewhat bland city-builder.
Regardless, it is the best city builder as of now. Will be interesting to see if Cities Skylines 2 manages to beat it.

This is probably one of the worst looking and performing ports on Switch. Like my god, it's fucking ugly and constantly runs between 10 and 20fps. But, even with all that, it's still a lot of fun. Just building cities, watching them grow, making sure everything is perfect, just for one poorly built intersection to create a massive traffic chain that causes your entire city to fall apart and for everyone to die. It's fun.

As someone who was sunk over a thousand hours in this game, it's a fun city painter, but little more than that. The vanilla game is not very good to be honest, as the buildings don't resemble real buildings really and the roads and buildings are also not very realistic (no RICO buildings bigger than a 4x4 grid? Really?).
The modders save the game to be honest, and depending on what you're going for, can make the game a fun way to kill time building your own model city. The cities are in fact, more like model cities than simulated ones, as the simulated aspects are repetitive, annoying at points, and not very complex to deal with, merely serving to get in the way if you want to build a realistic-looking city.
Additionally, if you are using 1,000 or 2,000+ assets like I am, the game is very poorly optimized and will take a very long time to load your cities, often crashing before cities can be fully loaded. I needed a high-end processor and lots of RAM, and even then I have never played a game that takes nearly as close to C;S to load and will continuously crash.
I am very excited for the Cities Skylines sequel that seems to be coming that will hopefully revamp the entire city-building process, straying away from a grid pattern and introducing more complex and realistic city management techniques that don't need to be saved by dozens of mods. I don't know, maybe I'm just foolish in expecting a game to tackle every part of the city building experience, but even the "city painting" style of playing requires mods and all sorts of trickery to make realistic-looking areas.

While the game does its job well, to me, there both seemed to be a lack of deep mechanics as well as a wall to players who do not wish to put much effort into planning, more or less ignoring both crowds at once.

Every once in a while I install this game and get lost in it completely until my city becomes so big the FPS counter gradually drops to 10 and it's practically unplayable and then I never play it for another year or so until I forget how shit this game's performance is.
Like, seriously. It's a 2015 game. How much RAM you need for it to run smoothly?
actually a really shit city simulator, the only fun I get from this game is watching my city grow but obviously that doesn't last long and then it becomes a boring traffic fest again
it depends a lot of why you don't enjoy it, but if you want something that is more centred on economic gestion Simcity 4 is still an excellent city builder to this day
pretty fun and i have way too many hours in it but god this runs awfully and was so clearly made by like suburbanites its way too car focused without mods and the expansions
funnily, the developers are from Tampere, Finland which seems to have decent public transit as well as walkability and bikeability. I suppose it’s telling about how little us Europeans appreciate not being as dependent on cars.
