Title
As someone who was sunk over a thousand hours in this game, it's a fun city painter, but little more than that. The vanilla game is not very good to be honest, as the buildings don't resemble real buildings really and the roads and buildings are also not very realistic (no RICO buildings bigger than a 4x4 grid? Really?).

The modders save the game to be honest, and depending on what you're going for, can make the game a fun way to kill time building your own model city. The cities are in fact, more like model cities than simulated ones, as the simulated aspects are repetitive, annoying at points, and not very complex to deal with, merely serving to get in the way if you want to build a realistic-looking city.

Additionally, if you are using 1,000 or 2,000+ assets like I am, the game is very poorly optimized and will take a very long time to load your cities, often crashing before cities can be fully loaded. I needed a high-end processor and lots of RAM, and even then I have never played a game that takes nearly as close to C;S to load and will continuously crash.

I am very excited for the Cities Skylines sequel that seems to be coming that will hopefully revamp the entire city-building process, straying away from a grid pattern and introducing more complex and realistic city management techniques that don't need to be saved by dozens of mods. I don't know, maybe I'm just foolish in expecting a game to tackle every part of the city building experience, but even the "city painting" style of playing requires mods and all sorts of trickery to make realistic-looking areas.

While the game does its job well, to me, there both seemed to be a lack of deep mechanics as well as a wall to players who do not wish to put much effort into planning, more or less ignoring both crowds at once.

As good as Cities: Skylines is, I don't think it needs an essay to nail a description. It's a city-builder done right. They learned from the failures of Simcity 2013 and improved their on previous city-building games with a rebranded effort in the form of Cities:Skylines. With Steam Workshop support and a sizeable community (as well as numerous map generators online to import real-world locations), this game allows you to truly make one's city their own. The UI is simple and relatively unclutter, the game looks good, and there's just the right amount of hand-holding. The tutorial won't walk you all the way to becoming a metropolis -- trust me, I think we all know our cities will need firefighters at some point -- but it tells you how to work the menus and shows you your toolbox and leaves you to it.

It's an easy game to learn and like a good city-builder, it's fairly challenging to optimize a city properly. I'd say it's pretty safe to say that at the time of this writing, it's the best in its genre.

This game is evidence of a monumental change in the gaming industry that is happening right now, after all it's a game made by a very small studio (18 employees) that's not just up to par with so-called "AAA titles", it's actually much better. They started it's development after the release of SimCity 2013, not just to take advantage of it's failure, but because Colossal Order knew they could create a far better game.

What's so wonderful about city-building games in the vein of SimCity is that they are not games about winning, reaching an objective or going through a story, they are games about creating. The game creators establish the rules of the world, give you tools to alter it, and then gives you free reign to do anything you want. Most of the time you will just improvise and slowly create something amazing out of nothing, though often you will also destroy your own city after poisoning the water supply.

Cities: Skylines expands the set of tools and the size of the world considerably, giving you the option to buy large amounts of land in order to create huge and complex cities, allowing you to create roads with multiple levels, divert rivers and follow each citizen on it's way to work (since each one of them is their own entity). The game improves on almost every system established by the SimCity series while also needing less micro-managing than SimCity 4. It's very impressive how organic and simple it is to build cities while also having more complexity and diversity of options.

The tutorial is also pretty good, although it comes with the disadvantage of having to slowly unlock buildings and utilities as the city grows, but this is also a good thing since you are not overwhelmed with choice early on, which was often a problem for new players in old SimCity games. If you are interested in City-building games this can be a perfect place to start since it's very accessible but also really great.

      Because they make games you put hundreds of hours into over many years and you need funds and to pay staff to do that- a lot of their dlc are introduced alongside major free updates to their games as a way of optionally paying to help them for return of some extras.

      I'd much rather pay Paradox every year to keep working on games I absolutely adore and know I am going to play for years than buy a new game. I've never found their games to be released half-finished just to have an excuse to add dlcs in the future as other companies have done.

      You don't need any of the dlc- thos is a great game without it - buy the base game then buy any individual dlcs in the future if you like the look of those particular dlcs. The dlcs go on sale all the time anyway.

      Think paradox use dlc the way it was designed to be used in the first place before companies started abusing them.

      CK3 and Imperator are examples of them releasing games half-baked only to be finished later on by DLC. I mean CK3, a game released ten years after the last in the series has not even half of the old content of ck2. There's no defending Paradox DLC cost.

    playing the vanilla version with no DLC, it really feels like the mechanics of your city just completely plateau after a certain point. Then you're just expanding for the sake of expanding instead of discovering and creating new things for your citizens.
