Circus is a Breakout variant where the ball has been replaced by a clown and the bricks are now balloons. It also has some elements of Rebound, in that the clown bounces on a more gravity-like trajectory than the straight paths of Breakout.
Superficially, this looks like a clever take on the ball and paddle genre. The bouncing clowns and colorful balloons add a dimension that brings it closer to the atmosphere you might expect from a carnival or fair. However, the more I played, the more I became frustrated with the design.
For starters, I discovered that the clown sometimes lands in places that are impossible for your paddle to reach. This means you can be on a streak and then suddenly, through no fault of your own, your clown goes splat. What's more, I quickly became frustrated with the heavily randomized bounce heights. This even applies to the clown's initial entry jump, which sometimes goes straight into the baloons, amassing hundreds of points before it even strikes your paddle.
At the end of the day, I felt more like I was playing a slot machine than a video game, and that's not good.

This is the kind of Breakout I could get into, because you have to pay close attention to where your guys land on the seesaw, and the moving balloons and planks on the side add an extra level of unpredictability.
