Circus Charlie is a lovely display of the kinds of things you can do with a platformer engine. The six minigames in here represent various disciplines of platforming which would be unexpectedly far-reaching in history, and all at various levels of difficulty(which are also spelled out for the player). Things such as jumping swing-to-swing, or avoiding being knocked by obstacles during an auto-run, spring/trampoline jumping, or riding barrels/logs/balls are all tropes that make their origins here. Although, you can't help but feel that the standards for difficulty have changed greatly today.
For example, I think the horse-riding level is actually the easiest of the games, if played slowly, while the monkey-jumping stage has always been unfathomably more difficult.
For people who seek secrets, be sure to find a secret seventh level(that involves dolphins) in the game, which is achievable after beating five ordinary levels of your choice.
