Talk about a game that brings me back. I remember playing this on my grandpa's computer as a kid, he had this game for some reason, I guess he got it for free somewhere and just had it around, and we'd play it upstairs in his room while my family visited. I remember when I was in 7th grade after we got our first computer my grandpa gave the game to us and I played the hell out of this. I was mildly obsessed with dinosaurs back then, I had loved dinosaurs since I was a kid, Jurassic Park was one of my favorite movies, I had dinosaur books, watched anything to do with dinosaurs on the Discovery channel, and this game was basically a dinosaur hunter game. It might have been relabeled Cabela's Dinosaur Hunter edition. I mean looking back this game was pretty bad and has aged horribly, you can buy the game for like $1 now on Playstation 3 minis, but hell I had a ton of fun with this in the early-mid 2000s. you basically choose a gun and breed of dinosaur you'd like to hunt, then you choose a map you'd prefer and you are spawned into the map and are free to hunt. You start with a limited number of points and the more dinosaurs you kill the more points you can rack up where you can then hunt bigger and more dangerous dinosaurs and choose better guns and bigger maps. This does make the game pretty tedious as your first few hours of the game will be hunting boring herbivores who run from you on sight and you have to take them out with a weak hang pistol.
But to be honest even when you unlock better guns and better dinosaurs and more interesting maps, the game doesn't get much better. The carnivores basically charge you on sight and you need to spam shoot them and hope they die before they touch you because they are a one hit kill. The T. Rex only dies when you shoot it perfectly in the eye. My biggest issues with the are the inability to mix different dinosaur breeds to hunt and the lack of variety and how sparsely spread the dinosaurs are. There aren't enough dinosaurs that spawn so you have to use your map to locate them and sometimes it takes a while for you to reach the dinosaur if you don't happen to spawn close to any. Its lame only being able to choose from one dinosaur breed to hunt, it'd be cool to mix herbivores and carnivores or put all the carnivores on one map, but the game restricts you making it get old fast. The maps are kind of cool but the textures are pretty lame and low resolution but I do like the design of some of them.
I mean overall Carnivores 2 is a time waster. Its a game to dick around in for a couple minutes and kill a few dinosaurs, but outside that its not a good game really, it could have been better had it done more, had more dinosaurs, maps, let you combine dinosaurs, maybe had a health system instead of a cheap one shot death, given you more ammo and had your movement feel a bit smoother. But hey what can I complain, this is a dollar store game and its one of the better games for this cheap. Plus I'm not going to deny this game gave me dozens of hours of entertainment as a kid and preteen, but I think ice age was slightly better.
