Title
Pros:
+ More HD Mario means more of that juicy, stylized 3D World art. Colors pop, great lighting, strong consistency between worlds because of cohesive enemy aesthetics.
+ The "Mario universe on shuffle" pacing of 3D World is purified even further through a rapid-fire assortment of small diorama levels.
+ Those coming from 3D World will appreciate how enemies and mechanics from that game, which could easily be jumped on or ran around, now pose significant threats to movement because of your inability to jump.
+ Small thing, but I appreciate the perspective shift to Toadette, especially when she and the Captain start going bar for bar in Volume 3. It turns it from a pretty boring rescue-the-girl plot into something much more whole.
+ Really fucking good soundtrack, as is par for all Mario-related titles these days. Razzle Dazzle Slider and Ghost Gallery Gambit are just fantastic.
++ Fun puzzle-platform gameplay with difficult levels that aren't too complex. The way mechanics are introduced and then amplified and combined is nothing short of amazing, and feels right in sync with the 3D World philosophy as well.
++ Unbelievably good use of perspective. You might be able to physically see every secret in a stage from the beginning, yet still have to think of ways to get to them.
++ Really clever boss design allows for added tension and difficulty without actually straying from the core gameplay loop. The dragon bosses in particular were great because they allowed you to plan in advance, but only act in short 5-second bites.

Cons:
- Storybook-styled presentation is charming, but seems a bit rushed.
- Heavy use of the touch-screen for later puzzles made my head hurt, because I couldn't play the game on the larger TV display.
- Gear-levers were annoying because they forced the camera perspective to whatever they control, even if just walking by them. This made the second dragon encounter more difficult than it needed to be.
- Pretty standard difficulty curve, but the bonus stages jumped up to a level I wasn't comfortable with even having just completed Volume 3.
- The "Mummy-Me" stages, similar to the shadow Mario levels from Galaxy 1 and 2, don't belong here. In a game experimenting with the problem solving of restricted movement, any mechanic involving a "chase" should have been immediately discarded. Not sure what they were thinking.

It does look very, very good. And the set-up of the toybox/diorama perspective scratches an itch I didn't know I had before. Besides that, Captain Toad is a complete wash, all its puzzles a matter of attrition with the controls rather than brainpower, leading to a deficit in satisfaction. These were one-off levels in 3D World for a damn good reason.

Title
One of the things I keep seeing lobbed the Wii U’s way is comparisons to the GameCube, pointing out how the ‘Cube was underappreciated at the time but now looked back upon as a great console and saying the same will happen to the Wii U. Well, for one, I’m seeing enough of those comparisons that I’m not sure the Wii U is as underappreciated as people think, but I’m also not seeing the striking originality that defined the GameCube in its early years. By this point in its lifespan, Mario and Zelda had followed up their massive N64 instalments with surprising left turns, radically altering the games in both style and gameplay; the system had keenly shown off its power with F-Zero GX and Super Smash Bros. Melee; interesting spinoffs had been created in Luigi’s Mansion and Kirby Air Ride; Metroid finally managed to burst into 3D now that the controls around it didn’t have to be clunky (even though they were still very different); two new and unconventional IPs in Animal Crossing and Pikmin had been created; there was a host of good third party titles available, some of them GameCube exclusives (Eternal Darkness, Viewtiful Joe). The GameCube was so good and so cool because everything that came out on it seemed to be different, exciting, and new.

What is there for the Wii U? I love Super Smash Bros., but it’s just a logical continuation of Brawl that will probably be left behind whatever the next instalment is (in a way that Melee hasn’t been) – ditto Mario Kart 8. Neither Mario game has really done anything new, as good as they are. Both Nintendo Land and Game & Wario utilize the Gamepad in ways other games haven’t necessarily done as well, but they’re still party games that’re only gonna be pulled out every now and again. (Most people would rather play Mario Kart or Smash Bros. anyway.) I haven’t played it, but to my knowledge there’s nothing really game-changing about Pikmin 3. The Wii U has plenty of good titles – most of the ones I’ve just listed are ultimately worth playing – but there hasn’t seemed to be a large stroke of originality that might make a game truly great.

THAT SAID – and I’m so fucking sorry to bury the lede this far in – Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker seems to be a step in the right direction. The types of puzzles found within this game are unique and smart, something I haven’t seen before. (Not counting Super Mario 3D World, obviously.) The idea of a platformer where you can’t jump is so seemingly counterintuitive that it becomes one of those “duh” moments – like, how has some indie studio not come up with the same idea? At any rate, it forces it to become a puzzle game (with some occasional action and stealth moments, surprisingly), trying to figure how to get up on that ledge without, uh, jumping. The use of the fairly free camera to get multiple angles on the situation is clever, and the dispersement of extra goals ensure the levels aren’t one-note. And the game throws in enough extra mechanics to keep things interesting, bringing back the Double Cherry and having Toad pick up turnips and being able to use turnip cannons.

Now, I’m not saying this is a great game, or even better than some of the less original titles – it’s not. There’s not a whole lot of content to be found here, and while that’s not necessarily a huge deal given the easy pick-up-and-(re)play nature of it, it means that it feels like it didn’t really figure out how to fully spread its wings. Plus, none of these are especially hard – not that I expected any crazy brain-teasers in a game feature a Toad as the main character (who is insanely cute the whole time, by the way – my face still lights up in a smile when he enthusiastically bursts out “Time for adventure!”), but when I can clear the whole game in a few hours it feels less like an exciting experience than a nice diversion.

Still – these are the kinds of games the Wii U needs right now. Stuff that isn’t just updates of what Nintendo has been doing for years, or third-party titles that can be more easily played on other systems, or even exclusives that wind up gimmicky or derivative. This is moving towards the Wii U actually being more than just a conduit for updates of classic Nintendo IPs and actually being something different like the GameCube was. And with another step in Splatoon on the horizon, I’m actually excited to see what Nintendo can bring to the table in the future. Don’t disappoint me, guys!

Yeah, so, I wrote this in the ballpark of when the game came out, so there's a few problems here...

a) The obvious one is that Nintendo didn't do that much in 2015. People seemed to like Splatoon a lot (thought I haven't played it much myself), and Super Mario Maker is a wonderful sandbox. But Xenoblade was met with a pretty mediocre reaction, and... Did they even do anything else in 2015? (Well, Smash DLC. They fucking killed it there.) And with rumours of the NX already on the horizon...
b) That said, I may have slightly underestimated things. The truth is, there's a lot of titles on this system that are simply solid, even if they don't bring much new to the table. (DKC, Rayman and Bayonetta all come to mind.) I still don't think it's remotely close to what the GameCube managed to accomplish, but the truth is I don't own a single game for the Wii U I don't like. My library isn't extensive, but that's gotta count for something.
c) My opinion on Smash here is, uh, a little reductive. I'm a competitive player for the game, and while Smash 5 could overtake it, it's more complicated than that.

Nothing about this game has changed, though. Fun little bit-sized treat. Closest GameCube parallel is Luigi's Mansion, I think, though that one was a lot more creative.

fucking hated the touch based puzzles but the rest of the game was p good. i think my biggest overall problem is the game feels really slow paced in comparison to most mario games

probably the way perspective shifting changes what you can see and therefore interact with. it could have been a slight influence, but definitely not a ripoff from what i can tell.

Finished the boss on Level 10 and was like "wow, what a neat little game!" And then chapter 2 started. And I looked up how many levels there were... yeah, I don't think I can stick with this
