Title
At the time Breakout was released, ball and paddle games were already old hat in arcades and the Pong formula had seemingly been played out. In fact, there was already a one-player ball and paddle game, called Clean Sweep, for gamers looking for single-player ball and paddle action.

But Breakout was just too good to not release. It is game design minimalism at its finest, requiring no sophistication to understand and never feeling limited by its simplicity. Atari's version is not necessarily the best or the ideal version of the Breakout concept, but it captures all of the essentials. Later titles would extend the gameplay with collectibles and power-ups (see Arkanoid), but clearing the wall with gimmicks is always less satisfying.

Title
Without Arkanoid, Breakout seems disturbingly primitive by comparison. It's single-purposed but the arcade versions also suffer from unfleshed hit patterns, which can easily make leftover bricks hard to strike.

DICE emulator has the most accurate port of it.

Title
The logical evolution of pong
Basically they took the ball and racket concept from Pong, removed the opposing player, and in its place they added a lot of destructible bricks. The game ends when the player destroys everyone of these bricks.

Its insanely better than Pong since instead of two players getting bored to death, only one gets bored to death. Jokes aside, the fact that there is a tangible goal meant that the game is more exciting, instead of waiting for an error of the opposing player which may never come. Like practically all games at the time, there is an highscore to pursue, which makes the game quite replayable. Obviously the game is very limited when it comes to its sound and visual presentation, This has to be one of the most cloned games out there though, with the most recent versions being very flashy and even delivering power ups to the player. Updates which do make playing this one redundant, unless you are playing for its historical significance.
