Before Your Eyes

Before Your Eyes is a very short but incredibly powerful experience.

The game's primary mechanic involves using your computer's webcam to track your real-world blinks. While this mechanic has its limits, it never overstays its welcome or hinders the game’s experience. This is largely due to the fact that recalibrating your webcam and the blink detection sensitivity in-game is simple and painless, often done in just a few clicks (If you’re unable to use the Blink mechanic for whatever reason, there’s an option to play without it). This is my first experience with webcam-based gameplay, and Before Your Eyes kept me engaged until the very (sad) end.

While some Gamers will consider the Blink feature a “gimmick” deserving of ridicule, it’s clear that the goal of the Goodbye World Games team wasn’t to blow minds through world-shattering gameplay mechanics, but to tell a uniquely immersive, emotional story that resonates with the player. The purpose of the Blink feature is to create a new sense of connectivity with their characters, one that allows the player to see the world through their own eyes. And it works! It’s a nice, interesting mechanic that– when paired with great writing and excellent performances– leads to some truly emotional moments during the game’s short runtime.

I’d absolutely recommend this game to anyone who wants something *heavy* and emotionally powerful. It likely won’t blow you away, but it is definitely worth checking out. I did an ugly face cry 3+ times.

Too much melodrama. The gimmick is gimmicky. I like the visuals, character animations are very expressive.
