Title
With Offroad Fury 3, the torch from Rainbow studios has been passed over to Climax studios. Rainbow would move on to the MX vs ATV series (MX Unleashed had already been released at this point), while Climax would be drafted away from their ATV Quad Power Racing series. Climax's development on QPR 3 was shifted to Offroad Fury 3, with only a few of their old mechanics carrying over. Despite the change in developers, this remains an Offroad Fury game in spirit. At the same time, all the advancement from the 2nd game has been halted during this transition. Instead of further improvements to the engine, the highlights fall into the increased amount of events and customizable features. After how well-rounded Offroad Fury 2 ended up being, Climax had some big shoes to fill.

As expected, the physics engine feels like a downgrade compared to the previous game. The gravity/design of the jumping feels far more stiff here. I'll give Climax credit that their bicycle mechanic (riding on two wheels) from QPR2 returns and it works just about as well. Not perfect, but it's a major help for building up points during freestyle events. Offroad Fury 3 also introduces a brand new POWERSLIDE mechanic that whips the quad around corners with a massive acceleration boost. It's a useful addition, though trying not to overshoot the corner takes some practice.

The blobby motocross jump design has been dulled down, which makes this physics engine more manageable to play with, at least. Though, this means that the focus on jump timing is not nearly as important as before. It's for the better, considering that the pre-load jumping doesn't feel nearly as good as before. These tracks also contain much more decoration than before, especially in the backgrounds. The AI stays on the player's tail constantly, meaning a single final lap mistake can ruin a race. Thankfully, it's much harder for the AI to knock you off your ATV compared to before. You can slam into the AI and knock them off, but the only way for AI to knock you off is if they land directly on your head. The tradeoff is that it's easier for you to crash on landings.

What this lacks in design, it tries to make up for with content. Offroad Fury 3 has more championships compared to the previous game, though the types of races are generally the same. The player can also use custom colors for the ATVs and rider gear, as well as custom tires and parts. The tire customization in Offroad Fury 3 is unfortunately more of a hindrance than a novelty. The player is persuaded to change their tires for every race, as using a bad tire combination on a track will nuke their speed and handling. On expert difficult, choosing the right tires for every track is a must. This means you have to quit out to the ATV menu and sit through an extra loading screen after every single race. And if you accidentally skip forward without changing tires, you will not have the choice to change them again. This is especially annoying during the first half of the game, when the player doesn't have enough money to actually buy new tires. Realism be damned, this is not a good feature.

This currency system is one of the worst parts of Offroad Fury 3. It wasn't necessary to grind out points in Offroad Fury 2. This time, however, money is necessary for every new ATV, track, set of tires, and upgrade. Meanwhile, you only get scraps for stunts and race completions, with the only real money coming from finishing championships. The good ATVs cost over 35k points to buy. Finishing a red targets objective (one of the most difficult objectives) gives you around a whopping 100 points. The races don't give you much more, meaning that you'll have to trudge through tournaments until you have enough money to buy a better ATV to win them with.

And of course, the stunts from before are still a significant part of Offroad Fury 3. It's the early 00s, so every extreme sports game wants to be Tony Hawk. Except here's the big difference. When you press the button combination for the trick you want to do in a Tony Hawk game, you'll do the trick. In these PS2 ATV games, when you hit the button combination for a trick, you might do the trick, but a lot of the time the rider will do something you probably don't want. Even Offroad Fury 2 couldn't turn the stunt system into a fun feature, so Offroad Fury 3 had no chance of making it work.

This game uses the same combo system from Quad Power Racing 2, and the controls are almost as annoying here as they were there. You have to press the face buttons and trigger button in the right order, followed by a thumbstick flick. It's a lot to ask for when you're trying to do multiple combos during the short amount of air time you typically get from the small jumps. The 6 digit score objectives in Pro Freestyle are just cruel.

Also, the red and green targets objectives have returned! They were one of my least favorite parts of completing Offroad Fury 2, though I have to admit they aren't as frustrating here. Unlike the previous game, grabbing a target doesn't add more time to the timer, meaning you have to hit everything in one solid run. These time limits aren't too harsh once you have a route figured out, though there were a couple levels that gave me much trouble (Glacial Resort red targets, anyone?).

If you're looking to go at this game from a completionist angle, you'll not only have to do two tournaments for every race mode (enduro, nationals, motocross, short tracks), but an expert version of each one as well. And an extra 2 'olympics' tournaments that combines every mode into one series for good measure. It adds up to a total of 24 tournaments, plus the freestyle events. The expert mode basically requires you to not crash, and nothing less. There's not a whole lot of jumping strategy, so you have to race tightly around the corners. But racing tightly in Offroad Fury 3 is more of a struggle than a challenge.

On the whole, this is a step up from Offroad Fury 2 in content, but a step down in racing gameplay. This gameplay is also more dull compared to Climax's own Quad Power Racing 2. If you've enjoyed any of the previously mentioned ATV games, you're probably not going to hate this one. Though, there's not much that makes it special, either.
