Nearly completely forgotten but undeniably important, originally made for the Atari ST systems in France by someone desperate to try and make 3D games (read: real 3D, not isometric graphics to suggest 3D).
The game is very primitive and should probably only be played in short bursts (then again, i'd say the same for other great games like Tetris or Pac-Man), Alpha Waves has you controlling a polygon around a 3D maze with tank controls so basically just explore and try and get a decent score.
Now what helps this game out is that it's unique as hell. No shooting, the score is the things vaporwave dreams are made of, the look is permanently attached to the year 1990 but somehow has this otherworldly trance-like style.
The PC version (that was ported by the creator of Alone in the Dark) is the best way to go with this game and certainly one of the most unique games of the year.

Truly ahead of its time. This game invented the 3D platformer genre... but for some reason nobody else thought about copying the idea (or maybe nobody could figure out how to do it?) and it got quickly forgotten. It took six more years until the genre got reinvented by Mario 64... and Bubsy 3D.
