Following the previous entry in the series and getting inspired by the already released Resident Evil games, another haunted mansion where you're tasked to uncover what happened, and so discovering the mysteries of the place (pertaining once lost native American rituals and colonizers appropriating such).
The characterization of main character, sidekick and antagonist is unsufferable, with the protagonist being without a once of Charme, lacking any kind of insight or brilliance. The dub makes it even worse. The plot revolves around a family of oil drillers getting involved with ritual magic, and big documents info dumps on you every now and then large amount of knowledge all at once. Combat is okay and barely avoidable; monsters are not that inspired, and the "light" theme/mechanic was underdeveloped which is a shame since the game implemented 3d pre-rendered backgrounds but illuminated in a fake real-time way by the 360 orientable torch, potentially nice stuff, which looks cool to be honest. Bosses are sparse and frustrating, with one mid game that is an unsufferable bullet sponge, and the final one which is quickly dealt with IF you know the trick (I lost a lot of time trying to unload on him everything I had). Puzzles are basic and don't get in the way. Unfortunately, the nice horror vibes I got from the first CD are gone in the second, with a load of uninspired corridors, backtracking and fighting, with an unbalanced positioning and ratioing of ammos and Medi kits (and then overloading you with it in the last minutes of the game). I played with save states, but I got the impression that save system was MEAN, with very few save objects, and no real clue of when a boss sequence was about to begin. The inspiration from Resident Evill extends to the presence of a secret lab underground (replacing bio-horror experiments with magic infused technology), which is one of the most annoying section of the game.
No great game by any chance, and to its detriment, one should consider the release date: 2001! We already got 3 Resident Evil games on PSX by this point (and Spencer Mansion was an already better haunted castle), and silent hill 2 was coming! Clearly out of time. Only for horror enthusiasts.

Haha I just played through the GBC game and actually kinda liked it. The combat is dogshit, but I found the environments and atmosphere compelling in an amusing demake kind of way. Like the closest we ever got to the cancelled Resident Evil GBC port.
